Even tho it says level 5 in the scoreboard, this was actually level 7. I actually crashed because the EMU slowed down, then did it's best to resynch and I just bought the farm.

Scores updated to reflect Malc's frankly obscene score.

Still just under 24 hours to get your scores in! Come on guys, there must be more than 3 of us who want to play it! Currently a single digit score would get you 2 leaderboard points!!!!!

Meanwhile I suggest Malc looks at a possible game for next week. One that people want to play! :DD

No other posts would seem to suggest that Malc's massive has been victorious.

Might i suggest for this week looking around for a title which can be played via a java emulator.

Most speccy games are (you can check at world of spectrum).
There are a few links in my Ghosts'n'Goblins post about some C64 ones , and Chinny has posted 2 Amstrad ones - for most of the other players its easier if they click a link and play rather than go through the download / install / configure route

Sorry, been dashing around and lost track.

Malc wins!

I must say chaps that I'm disappointed there were only 3 entries this week. We've played emulator only games before and got a better response!

I'll update the table in a bit. If Malc could name a game then that would be great!

Once again, I had this game on the CPC (I think I picked it up for £1.99) but as people won't install an emu, I'll go for the c64 version of it.

The Game is BMX Simulator and you can play it here.

I had trouble getting it work at first. If you start a 2 player game with both as joystick then the arrow keys control player 2.

I would suggest starting a 7 course game and seeing what your highest score is at the end of it, but I'll let Chinny decide on the exact rules.

Seems to work for me - I would also mention that CTRL is your accelerator
The two player thing does make it easier for the first level since you dont have the opponent to crash into but does mean you wait after you've crossed the finish line till the timer is up.

The game can be a real pain on the 2nd and 3rd levels since the computer player always comes off best in any collision and once they are in front if they lap you then you cant get over the finish line since they stop right in the middle (i doubt you could get round in time if you've been lapped anyway).

Scoring might be a bit akward because i've finished level 1 a few times and got a max of about 1100 points from it , and have finished level 2 twice and scored less than 100 (not much time left) and have not completed level 3 (yet) but i assume time is tight on all the future courses so your increase in points for them is probably going to be quite small

And if we stick with these options heres a score to get started with 1270 :

580, Bah!

For my money, the only one of the Simulator Series was Advanced Jet Ski Simulator as at least the unresponsive controls felt right for water based craft.

I'm up to 1300 points for the first race - and a reasonable score for the 2nd - but scrape by the 3rd and havent done the 4th yet.

Oy you lot, attention please!

With only a few weeks to go, my thoughts have turned to the next "season".

I'm proposing to setup a new thread where people propose games for the next season. After a week of suggestions we'll put them to a vote. We'll then play the top 12 games in a random order.

You'll be able to nominate any 8 bit game on any 8 bit home format you like providing it can be played online. People will be free to play in emulators if they wish but we must consider Dimrill those who can't play in an emulator. So alongside popular and much loved formats such as the CPC and CPC, you'll also be able to play NES, SMS or SORD M5 games (subs please check).

The rule about not having played the game for 10 years can then go out of the window as the vote should act as a leveler.

Thoughts?

I went to choose a game but Space Harrier didn't have a high-score table and I couldn't find Fast Food Dizzy anywhere :(

Nah, we went 16-bit in 1989 and haven't looked back.

Er, I'm pretty sure most versions of Space Harrier do have a high score table.

Fast Food Dizzy would be harder but not impossible. If we broke the "must play online" rule, it would be dead easy.

In fact one of our last Spectrum rounds was emulator only and had a large response. So I'm prepared to perhaps overlook the online play for Speccy games providing enough people agree.

Anyway, get playing this weeks game! I know it's shit but Malc likes it. :DD

The thing is that I'll probably only play spectrum games, and the game would have to appeal to me in the first place.

Why only spectrum games? Because after playing them once or twice and setting a score, I'd generally start hacking the code to do different things. I couldn't be bothered learning how to do this with another system. If I play for any longer, I tend to get annoyed by things like lo-fidelity controls, so without that extra draw, I'm not overly interested. There are only a handful of 8bit games that can command my attention for that long unaltered, and they generally involve mapping of some variety (Things like Knightlore, Atic Atac, Head over heels, Robin of the wood and Zelda.) The otherworldliness* forced onto them by the 8bit hardware limitations helps here.

* - It is a real word, honest.

I'm sure i could beat your score but i wont get another chance so I hope someone else can put the time in to get it.
My best hint is to get as much of a score (by going flat out) on the first screen - you need to be hitting 1300 points plus to get close to the 2500 mark by level 3 and 4 where your only making it by a few seconds so getting very few additional points.

The other hint is after level one let the computer player go out in front because they will knock you off if you brush up against them

I can't play it. There's some kind of fault with the emulation on both my Macs where I can't steer and peddle at the same time. In fact there's a half a second gap before you can alternate. Makes the game totally unplayable. Gah!

Malc Wins:

Malc - 2730
Zaphod - 2680
Mr Dom - 860
Chinny - 580

Although I must point out that due to a bug in the emulation I was frankly astonishingly excellent to even get 580!

Yes mum ......

Okay lets have something simple which everyone will remember and is still rock hard at times ...

Chuckie Egg on the speccy :

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek ... id=0000958

Made number 13 in the top 100 speccy games from YS :

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/ystop100.html

Java links on that page and i'll have a look for some which scale the screen up a bit .... like this one :

http://www.jorin.com/shed/zx-spectrum-4 ... chuckieegg

Instructions if anyone needs them ...... collect the eggs and food and avoid everything else - including the mad bad dangerous duck !

Terrible game.

Enemy AI seems to be non-existent, offensive options are extremely limited (where's my shotgun?!?), no camera controls, the texture quality is awful, there are terrible clipping problems, I couldn't work out how the hell I was meant to sign in to my profile, multiplayer appears to be OFFLINE ONLY, I played for several minutes without unlocking a single Achievement and when I finally managed to jump into the exit cage at the top of the screen, it glitched on me and I lost a life.

This uses the novel 'sign in at the end' for your profile so you can enter your profile name in the high score table.

multiplayer appears to be OFFLINE ONLY

Unfortunately this is correct , multiplayer is that each player controls part of the keyboard , or their own voice and either presses the controls or shouts at whoever is pressing the controls at the time (imagine Shin playing frogger with a voice controlled headset)

The achievements are quite hard to get on this one , try again and stay awake for more than 72 hours to gain your first

Awesomely, there's a demo program for Criterion's Renderware which is a 3D remake of Chuckie Egg:
