Where do you draw the line? Original Haitian meaning was a reanimated corpse under the control of a sorcerer. The deathly pallor and the slow moving bits were there.

Romero and the Italian exploitation flicks added the "destroy the brain" and flesh-eating aspects and removed the sorceror.

28 Days Later and Valve removed the slow motion and the destroy-the-brain.

Why is the middle definition more valid that the other two?

It matters because Dimrill's gay for Romero.

Come to think of it, why are Romero's zombies any more canon than the ones Russo used in the ... of the Living Dead films? The ones that can talk and work together and stuff? After all, Russo and Romero were credited as equal creators of Night Of The Living Dead, which pretty much started all this.

Russo is a fucking hack who's supped from the "Living Dead" well so unsuccessfully that he's parched with thirst, but has sodden clothes. Go and watch Children of the Living Dead, which was his and his crush's brainchild and try not to lobotomise yourself. Romero wrote and directed Night... based off I Am Legend, of all things, Russo funded for the most part.

Anyway, Return of the Living Dead was written by Dan O'Bannon who done writ Alien. Russo was only involved as a fund source and license of the "living dead" bit what he done got. Romero could us "of the Dead" and Russo got "living dead". Goddammit.

Where's Fulci?! EH?! WHere's fucking Fulci represented in gaming? Never! A great loss there.

I also consider the Evil Dead characters possessed by Candarian demons to be zombies aswell, they can hover and scoot across rooms too.

Oh yeah, them's zombies. I have no problem with sentient or flying possessed zombies. You never saw a fucking deadite run though. Even Linda shuffled with arms outstretched before being de-capped.

"Return" zombs and true Deadites would be a cunting bastard in a game though. Total dismemberment and utter obliteration would be the only way to kill them.

It makes no sense for them not to be able to run, though. If they're so weak they can't run, they're not going to be strong enough to stop me from pushing them over and stealing their lunch money. Running zombies are more realistic.

If you people don't stop it, I won't be held responsible for the entire collapse of Dimrill into interdimensional space and the resulting creation of a portal to the 5th level of hell somewhere in middle England.

Quite apart from the all this "it's that way because I SAID so", Simon Pegg wrote the best reasons zombies are best when they are slow:

Quote:
know it is absurd to debate the rules of a reality that does not exist, but this genuinely irks me. You cannot kill a vampire with an MDF stake; werewolves can't fly; zombies do not run. It's a misconception, a bastardisation that diminishes a classic movie monster. The best phantasmagoria uses reality to render the inconceivable conceivable. The speedy zombie seems implausible to me, even within the fantastic realm it inhabits. A biological agent, I'll buy. Some sort of super-virus? Sure, why not. But death? Death is a disability, not a superpower. It's hard to run with a cold, let alone the most debilitating malady of them all.

More significantly, the fast zombie is bereft of poetic subtlety. As monsters from the id, zombies win out over vampires and werewolves when it comes to the title of Most Potent Metaphorical Monster. Where their pointy-toothed cousins are all about sex and bestial savagery, the zombie trumps all by personifying our deepest fear: death. Zombies are our destiny writ large. Slow and steady in their approach, weak, clumsy, often absurd, the zombie relentlessly closes in, unstoppable, intractable.

However (and herein lies the sublime artfulness of the slow zombie), their ineptitude actually makes them avoidable, at least for a while. If you're careful, if you keep your wits about you, you can stave them off, even outstrip them - much as we strive to outstrip death. Drink less, cut out red meat, exercise, practice safe sex; these are our shotguns, our cricket bats, our farmhouses, our shopping malls. However, none of these things fully insulates us from the creeping dread that something so witless, so elemental may yet catch us unawares - the drunk driver, the cancer sleeping in the double helix, the legless ghoul dragging itself through the darkness towards our ankles.

But as Dimrill himself has said, Romero's zombies wouldn't work at all in a game. The very things that make them a great concept in film makes them rubbish in a game. I'm sure Valve would agree that L4D's zombies are the way they are because that's the game mechanics work best that way. Would you prefer they sacrifice playability for some sort of vaunted literary accuracy. And I don't think it makes the enemies in L4D any less zombies. Most people recognise them as that, so that's what they are.

@ Dimrill Rubbish zombies, you mean.

Real zombies are like the ones in 28 Days Later.

@ Gaywood - I read that at the time, as Brooker complained about it. Pegg's utterly wrong, as he's doing the same as Dimrill. "It should be that way because I say so" only works for God, and last time I checked he was being much nicer to Jessica Stevenson than Pegg has been.

But the zombies in Dead Rising are laughably fragile. You can plow through hundreds of them in seconds. You can't destroy a brain with a single swing of a 2x4.

I know that's the point. It doesn't stop them being shit though. I like my enemies to pose a proper threat, not slowly amble toward me.

Zombies are shit.

I think this post might give Dimmers an aneurysm.

I think you'll find they can, actually.

More so if being used by a zombie with the energy to get up beyond a slow shamble, of course.

The "fun" does not come because you do call them zombies. Calling them "infected" results in the same fun, yes? YES! Not zombies. *puts foot down*

No, because you then lose the atmosphere inherent in the genre. Plus they're zombies, so calling them "infected" would be stupid.

Using 'zombies' as a catch-all description for all varieties is just lazy. Don't forget ghouls, ghasts, and revenants folks - they more than cover your undead-describing needs.
