C-Max had its MOT today. Not good news. I quote...

Quote:
Offside Front Outer Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot split or insecure, no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (6.1.7 (g) (ii))
Offside Front Coil spring fractured or broken (5.3.1 (b) (i))

Sigh. That's costing me £400 as "the springs need to be replaced in pairs"

Am I being stiffed here?

No, they really should be replaced in pairs.
A bit steep but not daylight robbery. The springs would be about £30 each and the CV boot £10 from a quick look. Fair bit of work though so that’s the majority of the cost.
Maybe get a quote for the work at another garage?
Thanks for looking into it bud. Glad to hear I'm not getting stiffed. Weird thing is, they've already retested and passed the car. I'm pretty sure they haven't done the work yet
My car is in for a service and a rego check (equivalent to MOT safety check in principle, but i think a little less stringent).

I'm hoping they don't need to be concerned about the small steering fluid leak. A periodic top up seems to have been working OK in the past.
I was quoted £600 to do the rear springs on the mx5 as one of them was cracked (which I'm glad I didn't do! All things considered)

Weird that it has passed the MOT though, as a cracked spring is an instant fail...
I am eternally grateful I have car mechanics in the family. I have a pretty decent mechanic in London but even they get stuff wrong. It’s rare they invent work that needs doing though.
Stuff only fails the mot if you spot it.
Well, fuck, I need a new steering rack to get through the rego. Fucksticks and pissflaps

Oh, drive it home then.

I've a split shock absorber boot that I rotate before each test.

I know, right? Annoying
Well, not if you drive it home.

Assuming you haven't agreed to the repairs, of course.

Quite. I have.
I never ever post car videos on forums but gosh, you have to see this.

It's breath taking. Never seen anything quite like it. My brain burns just thinking about the work, let alone all of the stop animation.

Mind bending. Just utterly mind bending.
Yeah, that's some effort! I'll watch all that later, cheers.
A Skoda dealer has found me. Skoda Octavia Estate Elegance in blue. It is 14 plate with about 60k on the clock. Automatic for ability £8000

Is there anything I should be looking for?
Elegance is mid-spec I think.

I was the Model that became the SE L so the sales man said.

Asked for the spec. Test driving next week
Check it has a steering wheel, that is important.

And seats??
Mr Chonks wrote:

Trim levels went S, SE, Elegance, then L&K
Plus the VRS, obviously, which was based on the SE with sporty bits.
I went to that availablecar.com showroom in Cannock on Sunday, and was surprised at just how many cars were there and that they were all (with a few exceptions) just unlocked and you could sit in them and get a feel for them and stuff.

I was quite impressed, although I've no idea what they're like to buy from.

Is that where our car was from, @mr russell?
I've never known any car sales place to lock their cars, I don't think.

I went there. The only ones locked were being sold.

Yes. And you can use the printouts they give you for what’s on the lot to directly compare features without having to trail across the whole lot

Not sure on the service interval of the Octavia but I'd ask if it's had the cam belt done. Check it has full service history and also pop in the reg on the MOT website to see if it's had any fails / advisories.

After the test drive offer them £7,000, see what they offer on top.
Today I got to witness the rarely experienced miracle of the birth of a van.
Aww, it has its mother’s wheels
Proud daddy has arrived for the final push.
Just the one?

Thought they were expecting Twingos.
I have found a car.

https://www.madeleyheathmotors.co.uk/ca ... 8feaeb4772

They have reduced it to £10400. It comes with 3 months warranty. Is it worth buying the additional warranty they have offered one from ‘automation warranty’ which is 1 year for £399, 2 for £599.
Is that good value?

They are putting it through an mot.

Should I be looking at anything else?
Dealer warranties aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on in my experience.
Mr Chonks wrote:

This appears to be a third party warranty. I have no clue about these things.
Same thing, basically. I wouldn't bother. It's a 4 year old car with under 50,000 miles on the clock - it's only a year out of manufacturer's warranty, and any faults that show up within the first 6 months you can get the dealer to look at anyway under their legal obligations.

Skoda will almost certainly offer a manufacturer warranty if you're that worried about it, although your luck may vary based on how full the service history is.
Not particularly low miles for its age, I'd show them this with only 16,000 miles for under £10k and see what the best price they can offer you.

Good luck, it looks like a tidy car.

EDIT Just realised this is at an actual Skoda Dealership, get this one! :D

Other than it is a manual, no cruise control or sat nav and a different trim level. They are identical
I might ring Skoda tomorrow. Just doing 20000 miles a year I have concerns. Might be just over thinking.
KovacsC wrote:

Colour’s not as nice either, but it’s a hell of a conversation piece when you say to the other garage that you can get one with 16k miles for almost a grand cheaper.
Zardoz, that is not the same model either. but cheers.
For the sake of an extra £1k you can get the same spec with half the mileage.
So, what we have established here, is that the car kov wants is at the right price...

I hope so..

Looked at most of those. only one with exactly the same spec is the one with the glass roof. I will be fitting roofbars and a bike rack, so I did not think a glass roof would be wise.
