Gas Guzzling Money Pits
pointless expenses and cars

My Mk1 focus st sailed through it’s MOT this morning with no advisories. Had to put a new battery in it yesterday as it hasn’t been used much in the last few months and it wouldn’t start or hold a charge. Had all the fluids topped up as well.
It's always nice to sail through an MOT. After all the engine light stress of last year, this year's should be smooth sailing (he said, optimistically)
Have I wandered into the boating thread by mistake?
My car went for an MOT yesterday and passed despite the washers not working.

My garage and I have a nice agreement that they were working when I left there.
MX5 had a full service today and I had it thoroughly checked over.
Upshot is it is pretty solid, needs pads and discs on the back and could do with a brake and clutch fluid change, which I'll get done at some point soon. General maintenance stuff.

Two issues though, firstly apparently there is a crack in one of the springs, right at the very top. He showed me where it was and I nodded and said "oh yes, I see". I couldn't see it... I don't doubt it's there as the garage has a really good reputation and know their stuff, but it's not like it's completely broken in the middle of the spring, so while I agreed that it really needs to get done, i'll sort it out next month.
Secondly, when they did the diff oil change a little bit of metal came out with it, which isn't a great sign :D It's been refurbed once before and isn't making any weird noises, and seems to be working as intended at the moment, so i'll keep it in mind and swap it out for another one if a good one comes available, he's going to keep an eye out for one.

So half a yay, half a nay.
New radiator fitted, old one was fucked. Crusty coolant running down both sides.

Triggers broom rides again!
Well... that didn't last very long...

Minding my own business in traffic in lane 2 of the M1, going through the roadworks at 60mph.
Sideswiped by a LHD Bulgarian lorry, caught me on the left rear corner, spun the car in front of the lorry and into the concrete barrier on the left of the roadworks, and then pushed me down the road for 50 yards.
I'm ok, bit of a burn on my wrist from the airbag explosive going off, but Donna was knocked unconcious (probably by the air bag) and had some neck pain, so we had a fun trip to A&E for x-rays and the like. All fine, just sore.

Should be an open and shut case on the lorry driver, as he just pulled out into us, but it's foreign insurance, so it could take a while to sort out. Lorry driver didn't speak any english, but I got a photo of his drivers licence and insurance green card, so hopefully he should be easy enough to track down.

Car has already been written off just by the description of the accident to the insurance company, which is no great surprise. Every panel on the left hand side is damaged, front bumper, bonnet, airbags, dash etc... Considering the car is only worth £2k it was an easy decision to make. It held up really well though, no intrusions into the cabin. If it wasn't for the airbags we would have walked away without a scratch!

So... what do I get next!
Fucking hell, that sounds horrible. glad you're both relatively unscathed. Another Mazda MX-5, sounds like it was robust enough to get you through that skirmish.
Edit - double post
Fucksocks. Pleased you are not dead.
Ouch. That could have been much worse.
Mk3 MX5 SVT
Glad you’re ok. You’re being remarkably sanguine about it. Make sure Donna has follow up treatment for the stiffness. Whiplash can take a few days to make its presence properly felt.
Shit! When did that happen, earlier today? We passed a huge tailback that was on the southbound carriageway of the M1 just after we got on it to head north from MeatUp earlier, that wasn't you was it??

Glad everyone's alright anyway, and yeah make sure Donna gets properly checked over!
Glad you’re ok, mate. Get Sat on the case with regards injury etc!

Don’t get another MX-5. Get a car big enough that lorries can see you.

Probably me, just after 10am, southbound between junction 14 and 13.

I'm remarkably calm about it all, it didn't feel much different to spinning out on the track, which I have done enough times in the past! Then it was all over. Worst part was Donna was unconcious so I had to wake her up, which wasn't a fun few seconds.

It's only a car, we're both fine that's what matters.

The bus.

(glad you're ok :) )
Holy shit! Glad you’re both OK, Trooper.

Still loosing coolant! Back in tomorrow.
Wow, glad you're okay Trooper, sounds scary.

Hope you don't ache too much when the adrenaline calms down. Xxx
Bit sore this morning, but not too bad. I didn't really have an adrenaline spike as such, which was weird.
Turns out unknowingly living your whole life with a constant low level anxiety gives you a bit of a shield in crisis moments :D

Congrats on your psychopathy! But seriously, glad you're ok. My parents were sideswiped in a similar manner by a Hungarian lorry driver on the A19. They ended up wrapped around a fencepost in a field. The driver also spoke no English. Their lawyer said that foreign drivers are usually instructed to not even attempt to speak English in the case of an accident, unless they are fluent. The case was solved pretty quickly though. The lorry driver blamed his enormous left-hand drive blind spot. I suspect your case is much the same
Crikey Trooper glad to hear you're both OK, that could have been a lot nastier than it was.

At least Brexit will get all these pesky European drivers off our roads with their blind spots and steering wheels on the wrong side of the cabin.
So sorry Trooper. Glad you’re both (mostly) ok, but as DBS says, make sure you follow up and get treatment where needed.xx
Wow Trooper... It sounds like you've taken that extremely well! I'm glad no one was seriously hurt. Stay safe!

Aye, probably then. Did a fire engine turn up? We'd have been going past at around 10:45 I reckon.
Had you come to BBQ, you would still have a car.

Yeah, that was me. Ambulance, fire engine, recovery truck, police, the whole 9 yards :)

Hey look at me, I'm Hearthly... vroom vroom!

In all seriousness, that doesn't look too bad of a buy to pootle around in while all the insurance business gets sorted out.
No courtesy car?
Not if it's a total loss against a foreign driver, for various shitty insurance reasons.
Is that 175k miles in 9 years?

1.3?
More than enough power for anyone, that.
Booked in to see the physio on Thursday, just to get checked over at least.
Glad you are ok.

Fortunately there's no chance whatsoever of my Hyundai ever deprecating like that 8)

You’d have been better off just setting fire to £20 notes once a week
Belated glad you and yours are OK. That's shitty.

Well racist.
