OK, under ssh/tunnels in the putty config, you need to add the ports that you want forwarded. Then it should just work...

Yes, either redirect to port 22, OR, move ssh on the computer to port 80 or whatever and forward that straight through.

I think they chose him due to anachronistic voting mechanisms in the Labour Party and DM will soon slip away into the shadows not to be seen or heard of again, EM will stay as leader and the Tories enjoy a surge in popularity due to half the Lib Dems being really, really pissed off with their party and EM being a knob. So, looking forward to a Tory majority in 2015.

The entire media was saying this would happen, and has been doing so since Saturday. I think "genius" is a very over the top way of saying "I agreed with the papers".

If I were insured against my making some error, then yes.

As it stands, no.

Having had a very brief look at this, Professional Indemnity insurance cover for up to £1m with annual fees being brought in of £30k is £1k. Setting up a company, call that £100 or so (I think, can't remember exact figures), laptop and decent printer £600 and some really nice paper and file covers £200 and advertising, I reckon I could set this up for £2k. Not sure about insuring the car for business travel. How much does a simple website cost to build, with some guff and a 'Contact me' section?

So, that's 20 wills at £100 a pop (ex VAT) if I visit someone, do the interview, draft the will, show it them and sort it to recoup initial costs.

I'm quite tempted by this idea.

Shop around for insurance. I don't know your industry but that seems rather high. I carry around thousands of pounds worth of kit and am insured against burning my clients premises down up to some absurd amount and yet I pay approx 800 quid a year. The trick is to use a specialist broker not a general broker.

Advertising costs more than you think because you need to find what works. For some industries flat advertising (ie printed) still works well), but for me that's now dead.

You also need the money for a good accountant. You may think you can save money by doing it yourself but chances are you are wrong. Just in a half hour meeting with my accountant on Monday she identified at least 1.5k's worth of stuff I hadn't realised I could claim for. Cheaping out on accountancy is the biggest false economy you can make.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 22 - Two Little Ducks

Advertising is something I know little about, so that could get expensive quickly. Business volume also concerns me, as the two are linked.

I figured getting a 30 year old shelf company might add a veneer of respectability, but this will increase costs. Not owning the software could add to the time it takes to draft stuff, so I'll probably have to type up my boilerplate stuff from paper to make writing them faster.

I'll have a think for a few days over it all. Thanks for the advice so far, it is appreciated.

If you do that stuff if you're not a proper lawyer you have to very very much flag that you're not a lawyer. Which in and of itself is offputting for the customer.

How do your competitors advertise? Is pay per click worth it? Once you are up and running you could get some adwords vouchers to find out.

Facebook advertising is quite interesting and I started using it yesterday. You can target people by age and by interests. I've yet to see if this works, natch.

But as with any business you need money to do this. I think your figures are low. I started on a low budget and it made things painfully difficult for the first two years. I couldn't even splash out on things like brochures that I now take for granted.

Although that said if I'd had more to spend I might have lost money over the first couple of years which I didn't. But I reckon you should allow for an extra cushion.

It's a nice logo.

But your point does flag up my greatest concern of attracting business. I might contact the local person that does this and see if they want a hand and see how she deals with it.

The other side of me says "it's a couple of k, do it"
