What did you do to it?

Have you had it powder coated and etc?

I did read back a couple of pages but couldn't find what happened to it.

He clipped it on the stack of garage receipts.

I am excite. Money in the bank for a new car! After much deliberation over all kinds and makes I've narrowed it down. So we drove a 2010 Type R GT today and liked it, I love the way the engine starts to howl and just generally goes fucking mental but only after 6000rpm. It even had just enough practicality to work as the main car. BUT, it was all a bit rattly! Going over any bumps I could hear the plastic everywhere. I don't know if it was a bad one or I'm just too used to my old BMW which still feels solid and quiet, it's a shame because they're meant to be pretty bombproof where it really counts but I just cannot abide hearing trim pieces shaking about.

Off to look at a MK6 Golf GTI tomorrow and maybe another Civic. I think unless I hate it I'll probably end up with a Golf, though. One of those with the semi automatic gearbox should be fun enough when needed but still good trudging through traffic and hopefully feel a bit better put together. I just need to choose right because a new car is a rare thing for me, whatever I get I'll be keeping it for five or six years at least and by then cars will almost be banned in favour of self-driving electric travel-pods so I need to make it at least slightly fun.

There are some good deals at the moment. Found one for a Renault Zoe for £199 a month over three years for 8000 miles a year. Renault claim it does 250 miles per charge but real world tests say nearer 180. That would just get me to my parents in one go.

What’s the initial payment, and does that include the battery?
I know Renault used to list the battery lease separately whereas Nissan used to bundle it in.

There's no separate battery lease if you lease the car. Initial payment is about a grand I think.

I guess it all depends if you think you will spend up to £3600 on your current car in the next three years? And if you expect to spend less than that, is the extra cost of the new car worth it to have a new car, both in terms of experience and peace of mind.

So, this didn't last too well, as "a bit wonky in places" has actually turned into "engine conked out and now won't start" so back to the dealer it goes! Planes are easy, it's all the camping gear etc. I was even looking at SUVs but I'm fucked if I'm spending the rest of the time driving some massive big thing that I don't even like just because it would be good for camping and taking things to the tip.

I think this is going to be a waiting game. The Golf I was going to look at today had gone and there's just nothing else about.

Might just run the Octavia for a few years and see what the state of play is with EVs then. Hopefully cheaper, better range and something bigger than the Zoe. The new Leaf would be pretty much spot on, but way too expensive currently.

Probably the best move. If you can, maybe put the extra £100 a month in a savings account, so that if anything does go wrong on the octavia you at least have the choice of fixing it, or putting that saved cash down as the deposit on a Zoe if nothing else has turned up in the meantime.

Just managed 58.8mpg on the way home from work in the Yaris, and filled up the tank for just under £30. Big difference compared to the 5GT (which got around 38mpg on the same run, and cost nearly £90 to fill up!)

It's a long way short of the supposed 85.6mpg that the Yaris Hybrid can get, but I expected as much - and anything over the BMW's consumption is good to me.

Yeah I don't see the point of hybrids tbh. I get 55mpg in the Octavia.

Does that 58.8mpg include the time the electric motor runs, or just when the petrol engine is working?

In terms of your carbon footprint there's no difference I don't think. Diesels just spew out loads of horrible crap that's bad for anyone breathing it in.

Hmm, the more I read about Golf GTIs the more I think that they can be a bit high maintenance, with a variety of issues (timing chain tensioners, water pumps etc.) commonly affecting the ones I was looking at.

I know that there are plenty of horror stories about any car but there do seem to be more expensive surprise bills for the Golfs. Whereas apart from usual stuff the Civics seem to be mostly fine as long as you can remember to put some oil in them.

Been looking at Type R GTs which do have stuff like aircon and cruise control etc. Not sure how noisy they are from the outside but I don't think they're too bad with the standard exhaust. The also fitted LSDs to the age of car I'm looking at which apparently helped matters significantly.

They aren't quite as efficient as the Golf but I only do around 8000 miles a year anyway so it doesn't add up to much. I'm really talking myself into this now.

Correct choice IMO, and as you mentioned a few posts back, the era of Golfs you were looking at have all kinds of known issues with them, some of which can be fairly pricey to sort out, or just a pain in the arse, or both. (As do loads of German cars, they're so overrated.)

The Civic is basically bombproof, I had that generation of Type-R myself and it was a fine car - (and have owned many Hondas over the years, they pretty much just don't go wrong) - not exactly a luxurious interior but whereas VW would give you nice soft-touch materials on the inside and a load of important stuff that would break, the Civic is more concerned with working day after day, month after month, year after year.

(And the interior of the Civic is durable and long lasting.)

I mean it's eight years old so anything could happen but here's hoping.

Picking it up tomorrow. Got a pleasant surprise when I phoned my insurers to let them know. £236 for the full year, fully comp. Even cheaper than what it quoted on the comparison sites and almost no different than third party fire and theft on the BMW, which I don't really understand at all. Becoming old does have some benefits I guess.

How old is the BMW in comparison? There is a sweet spot of age for insurance purposes, for example. If your beemer is older, at some point the premium rises.

Brand and model also makes a difference, so does value.
Value has a similar profile to age, in that it starts to increase your premium as it gets cheaper after the value sweet spot.
