RE; the two minutes silence thread- on the radio this morning (might have been in thought for the day actually) they said that the origin of the two minutes silence was an Australian journalist and soldier who wrote into a newspaper after witnessing mass celebrations and rowdy behaviour celebrating the end of the first world war. He thought it would be more fitting to have five minute silence of 'sombre contemplation' i think they put it. It was also suggested by a south African, and became a tradition when the king (one of the Georges :p ) supported it. So apparently, British people think of it as a british thing but it's origins aren't exclusively British and really the only British parts of that are the newspaper and the King.

That's quite mad. It's never occurred to me that it might be just a Brit thing, but I guess part of the hoopla over remembrance may be precisely because of that. Nuts!

Wasn't it a minutes silence before we moved from BD/AD to AD(2)?

Found a nice place in Bingley where a pint of IPA and a glass of wine costs £5, drinks get bought to the table and the barmaids are seriously underdressed. Wish I'd have gotten that haircut now. And worn the red shirt. And not gone in with MrsA.

Have you given up on Terra Nova too? I can't be arsed to finish the last episode or watch the next one.

Old Fire Station.

Terra Nova is Mondays, and someone got banished. Will keep watching it, probably.

Asterix books in 'not-very-reliable-as-history' shock - see this piece in the Torygraph.

Well, perhaps. But I learnt far more Latin from them than the three years I spent studying it at secondary school.

If you've got spinning fans then surely the PSU can't be fried? Unless your fans are powered by magic...

The fan normally works off a separate winding, so it will often work while the other outputs don't.
Could easily be something else though.

No beeps. Don't think I've even got a beeper.
Thanks for the suggestions: really could be anything. I had a quick peep inside and everything felt like it was home, so all a mystery.
I will carry on poking about, but am tempted to file it under 'it was going to happen someday'.

Have just spent the afternoon shaving the dog. We are stressed, bleeding, and not talking to each other.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the chinese crested powderpuff has two separate coats, the undercoat which is like goose down and a normal later on top, they don't moult so the undercoat keeps on growing and growing and becomes matted if you let them be a normal dog, plus the hair on the face never stops growing so they end up not being able to see, only thing brushing does when it gets very long is to rip our chunks of hair. Because of this you need to totally shave the dog's body every couple of years

Did you win any money?

And what did you do, just make pockets for the scratch cards? I'm wanting to do it this year, you see.

Kate got about £40 in winnings, but it cost me £40 in scratchcards, so at least we broke even!

Yup, each number is just a pocket glued to the backing on three side, with the top open to slide the scratchcard in :)

Any iPhone people use instagram? It's a photo ap that lets you apply different styles to your pictures and upload them. It's basic but has kept me entertained. Ianfairies for anyone kind enough to stick your thumb up at pictures of my doggie.

I liked Instagram as a place for people to show what's possible with an iPhone camera. But it's full of people just uploading DSLR stuff to it.

I have broadband at the new house! Yay!

It's not mine! Nay!

Plugged in my phone and router. The phone has a dial tone, but when dialled out the number is withheld. Through rudimentary investigation I've ascertained the number, as it was used by a business that was run from this address by the previous owner.

The broadband on the line is presumably his previous broadband, too. It's with TalkTalk, is still active (and my router connects to it fine, despite having Zen authentication details in it... interesting security there, TalkTalk!) but is only 2Mbps and not the 18Mbps I'm used to. Boo.

I anticipate this being cut-off when BT start fracking about at the Exchange in preparation for my own broadband going in, but for now, woo! Free Internet!

Plugged in guitar amp on Saturday to discover that one of the pickups on my guitar is broken. Which is a bit of a disappointment. I'll probably get a cheap replacement for it. Stupid thing's only lasted 16 years. Not bad for a £99 guitar.

I wish I hadn't clicked on that link - it got me nosing around some of the starter sets on there. Learning the guitar is one of those things that I've always wanted to do but have always known full well I wouldn't apply enough time to learning it properly.

Yeah. The Asda's have an (admittedly rubbish looking) electric guitar and amp for £70 or something. I don't want one, I have a perfectly good acoustic that I haven't picked up for about 8 years.

Press conferences nowadays are shit. Why can't questions be asked about the captain of the England football team being investigated for allegedly making racist remarks? That's something far, far, worse than shagging someone's ex girlfriend. I would have gotten shot of him straight away, saying "Look, you're under investigation for this, we're not going to continue with you in your current role until after this is over. The reason is, we can't be seen to be habouring a racist in our ranks, no matter what he does on the field of play, as it would just make a right mockery of any form of ant racism sentiment we wish to promote."

As much as I dislike John Terry, that allegation officially came from a viewer who apparently lip-read on video after the event.

Why should a professional worker be automatically demoted for an allegation levelled at him from a random, before any formal decision is reached?

[edit] Agreed on the press conference thing, though. Too many questions are off limits nowadays.
