Certain graphics file types can store colour profile information you see, some programs ignore it and others will try to utilise it. It's a fucking minefield.

Certainly darker. She's got a colour profile set where they've both run the monitor configuration software. At least it's just her machine though so I'm just going to ignore it - it looks fine for everyone else so I'm not going to worry about it.

Cheers folks!

Today, whilst buying parts for my gran's shower which I fixed all by myself I popped into Staples and bought some pick n' mix.

But, not just any pick and mix...

PAPERCLIP Pick n' Mix.

See how full this glass is?

Imagine that water is in fact win.

It is not as full of win as Paperclip Pick n' Mix.

The problem is the colours still don't quite translate properly. Designers don't understand this.

They also don't understand what works well in print doesn't work well in video. Red isn't ideal in video land as any compression system that uses 4:2:0 colour compression tends to pixilate reds for example. 4:2:0 is used everywhere from the MPEG on DVD's through to Windows Media and Flash. Red text on white always looks grim for example.

Very much :this:

It's a source of some embarrassment to me that, despite eight years in the IT department of an art college (including supporting stuff like Photoshop, scanners, cameras, printers etc.), colour profiles still confuse me.

Hmm, that might explain why red always appears pixellated on my (obviously ageing now, but quite pricey at the time) CRT tv.

Well, some colours cross over perfectly, the problems occur when one is outside of the others gamut. As someone who produces graphics for print and web I always say, 'fuck it, it's close enough'.

Everyones monitor is calibrated differently.

Do you have a 'reference level' monitor for your vid work Chinny? Like Musos have studio monitors for sound?

And if they really, really want a colour to be accurate, they can use a Pantone.

Yeah, and they need replacing every 12 months due to sunlight to be perfectly accurate.

Compare that to the cost of getting your clients corporate colours printed wrong though.

Indeed. We once forgot to set a small layer on a map to Overprint Black, and the whole thing had to be re-printed at a cost of >£3k. That isn't the same as the colours being wrong, but any mistake in large print jobs is incredibly expensive.

I should have realised something like this would happen to be honest. The lecturer is one of the biggest moron's I have ever met! She's nice enough and everything, but she hasn't got a clue when it comes to teaching us.

Every week it's like she's making it up as she goes along.

One of her snippets of teaching wisom went like this

"If you don't know what that theory is, google it. It's all over the internet"

Fantastic!

No, because they are fuck off expensive and it makes sod all difference anyway when everyone has their TV brightness set so high it'll fucking x-ray you if you walk past. Files for computer playback are different anyway as you can get away with higher video levels. If I was doing TV stuff perhaps I'd need one.

I have a cheap portable 14" CRT which I have calibrated via the service menus that provides me with a visual check. I'll also check DVD's on a large screen TV and tweak accordingly.
