More times than I remember. I have shit bones, and have been known to break both my arms by simply braking too suddenly on a bicycle. I have learned to be careful.

Mimi, that's awful, but I don't think it's atypical unfortunatly, Pauline used to to do part time care work like that, and the amount of time the people she was caring for would wish that all their carers were like Pauline (who actually did her job properly, and treated them as a person, rather than just sitting down to watch the soaps, or using their phone to call their friends, or serving up burnt toast, or whatever). Also, it sounds like Brent's medical support services (or whatever you want to call them) are just as bad, if not much worse, as they were 12 years ago when Owen was born and we had to use their midwives and then Health Visitors. They were a major reason why we decided to leave London and head to the sticks...

Sorry to hear that Mimi.

I used to work for social services as an admin so would handle these calls from time to time. Call social services and ask to speak to your mother's social worker. If there's not one, there should be a duty officer available (the actual organisation depends on your council).

After your conversation, put everything that was discussed into a letter and send it to the office you spoke to. Having things on paper makes it easier for everyone later on. This is especially important if you wish to make a complaint. You might want to speak to your local councillor or the local MP too (we always found that letters from such people would get priority)

Finally, have you considered asking for a carer's assessment? There might be services available for you in your role as a carer for your nan, and it's important that you are supported as well as she is.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 22 - Two Little Ducks

Thankyou Kern and everyone else.

I called the office at 9 this morning and after a brief description of what happened requested that nan is not seen by this carer again. They have assured me that the carer will be called into the office and that regardless of what happens in their talk and investigation if needed that Nan will not be seen by that particular carer any more. Also, that said that all morning breakfast calls are done some time between 7-10:30, so that she was coming over at 12:00 was wrong anyway (which I'd guessed from the fact that she refused to log in.) I said that I would follow u with a formal letter of complaint, but wanted to call today to ensure that alternative care was sorted out for the mornings of next weekend.

I then phoned social services to let them know what happened so that there is a record with them also. Nan's social worker is going to make a follow-up call later to make sure that they have appointed a new weekend morning carer and to discuss what happened.

@Kern: Nan was actually assessed when she was released from hospital, but fell onto her knee about an hour after the assessment took place, taking her from relatively limited mobility (could get around but only short distances) to not much mobility at all. She has been seen by a doctor and a physiotherapist is due to visit tomorrow to asses the strength of her knee(s) and when I spoke to the Social Worker she said that she'd pop around to discuss the assessment to see if any extra fittings or visits could be made to help as I am only here temporarily whilst she recovers from hospital stay, etc, time dependant on recovery.

There is a relief carer coming for three hours on Wednesday so I can get a bit of time for some fresh air, etc, and I actually have someone popping over for an hour today so I can dash to the shop for some food (I went to the cupboard and the cupboard was bare). So far my meals have consisted of:

Saturday lunch: air
Saturday dinner: small bag of Doritos and some white chocolate buttons from the fridge (so rendering the taste like little wax discs)
Sunday lunch: air and water
Sunday Dinner: 1 squashed Cornetto.

Nan does have food, but it is ALL Marks and Spencers fish :spew: meals.

Meems, what is the name of the private company that this carer works for? My girlfriend works in HR for a pretty major Out-Of-Hours healthcare provider (I daren't say which right now. If you thought I was evil incarnate when I used to work for Lexmark, you'll be audibly boo-ing and hiss-ing in your seats when you find out where the missus works.)

Anyway, if it's the same company I might have to make a mention about this to her.

Yes, I had that, too. So instead of the brilliant, witty English consultant surgeon, I had an incomprehensible, uncaring Indian guy. Win!

Except in Wrexham hospital, where I had my wrist sorted out. Every appointment there was with the surgeon, and a thoroughly excellent chap he was, too. He was so proud of his handiwork he asked if he could take some photos of the movement I'd gained back so he could boast to his students.

I was up on the roof the other month (a) putting a mesh cover onto an old, unused chimeny (we have 4, two of which are used) to stop the rooks nesting in it and (b) squirting wasp-killer powder up under the roof tiles at the top of the roof. Fucking terrifying. The whole time I was thinking about my previous trainee whose dad fell off a roof and paralysed himself a few months earlier.

I've started a new role today since I got made redundant last week. It's a 6 month secondment in the same building for the same company.

The thing is.. I hate it! It's not what I want to do and it's taking my career on a tangent.

I've got 28 days to find a new job and if I can, I can still get my redundancy money.

I hate the CSA how bloody useless are they!!

They have had my bank details since April, but have not yet taken a payment direct debit yet.. Every month they don't take it I have to make a credit card payment to them..

So again no payment taken last week, I ring up to chase them (not that I should have to chase to pay), and have been told that they will default me if I don't pay by card, even thought it is there fault....

I am not sure what is best to do, pay by card and wait till next month to see if they take the payment OR do nothing (which means the ex won't get the money) and make the CSA sort it out...!!!
