Or maybe they don't already have a pad, and object to having to fork out to buy one just to make their new game vaguely playable?

Yeah, that too. They should have put "best with a gamepad" or something on there.

Because it's one of my fave 360 games and PC gamers stink of meat and potato pies.

You have to bear in mind some of the history of the PC version of Dark Souls existing.

The studio have basically no experience making PC games. Dark Souls was never ever intended to be on PC.

They only decided to do it because of huge fan demand for it. They were totally upfront about it being a quick and dirty port.

I agree it should say "better with a controller" on the packaging/store descriptions.

The resolution thing is kind of strange, but basically a none-issue since 23 minutes after release when a mod was released to fix it.

Hopefully if it sells well From Software will plan to make a PC version of their future games, including any sequels, and do a better job of it.

Edit: Anyone saying that games which play better with a controller shouldn't get a PC release are crazy. Flight Sims, fighting games and platformers generally don't play very well with a keyboard and mouse, but PC gaming is richer for having the option to play them. One of the brilliant things about PCs is that they can support a massive range of controllers, not just the default/one that the platform holder decides to make you use. Yes it would be better if Dark Souls was playable with a keyboad and mouse, but if you refuse to use anything else, you have the choice of not playing this game.

In which case it shouldn't cost £30 on Steam or be available to buy in a fucking box.

Well it's £18.19 here or £23.99 here from a less dodgy retailer.

Why shouldn't there be a retail version of it?

No, I don't. If you're going to put a boxed game on the shelves and charge for it, it gets judged as a game on its own two feet. Unless you put a massive caveat on the front that says "PROBABLY DON'T BUY THIS - IT'S A BIT SHIT! IN OUR DEFENCE, BEAR IN MIND SOME OF THE HISTORY OF THIS GAME EXISTING".

Amazing. The resolution is shit and the controls are unusable. So it's fine.

Lewis is an odd aberration though, in that he is a part of the Beex Hivemind who has also been paid off via Savygamer ;)

I can remember when Half Life 2 was ported to the original Xbox. It wasn't as good as the PC version but those swines charged full price! And they didn't have the decency to stick a big label on the box telling me either, the cunts!

I still paid up, mind. It was a decent game even though it was a poor facsimile of the original. I appreciated that they'd done it though because I wouldn't have played it otherwise.

Good game that Half Life 2.

I've finished it twice dontchaknow.

Not as good <> unplayable without a pad.
Not as good <> didn't even bother to change the on-screen button prompts
Not as good <> requires a community created hack to run in a decent resolution

I can't believe people are actually defending this. Dark Souls being a brilliant game doesn't excuse the PC version being a shocking port.

There were many signs like that near some wadis in Oman. They looked stupid at the time, but, on reflection, were only seen where large sumps were, to catch any flash floods as the rain ran from the mountains. In the dry, it was a good place to drive a land rover around in.

I mostly agree. Pretty much with the exception of Capra, dying has tended to be a result of impatience or stupidy more than anything else.

Yes, despite its reputation and the fact I'm not usually a fan of "hard" games I'm enjoying this because I'm terrible at it but slowly getting better. I'm an embarassingly short distance into it as well considering how long I've been playing :belm:

Regards the debate over the shoddiness of the port - I bought it eyes open to the issues, and because this was after the res mod came out and because I had an X360 pad I didn't figure it'd be a problem for me. Quite right though that there hasn't been enough warning in reviews, on the box and Steam etc that you probably really should be playing it with a pad and it's more a akin to an emulator (metaphorically) running the X360 version of the game than a native version.

It's still great though.

Also I'm amused that with the other issues there's not been much complaining about GFWL. I'm sure it's out there, but drowned out by the rest of the problems.

I don't understand the GfWL hate. I've only used it for one game (Dawn of War 2), but it seems fine.

Neither do I. It's been more than fine for every game I've played under it. DoW2, DoW2:Chaos Rising, Batman Arkham Asylum, Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY, Where's Wally (yes!), Tinker, Halo 2 and Bioshock 2. No problems at all.

First game with GFWL I've ever played that it's not had at least some issues with, aside from delaying launching the game by about 5 seconds, it's relatively harmless here.

A lot of the problems with GFWL aren't currently relevant for this really. Installing a game that also needs to be patched can be a nightmare, and DS has had no patches yet. Getting into a game with friends and managing friends lists is terribly managed, but although it's used for multiplayer, neither of those functions are needed/possible for DS.

another thing to note is that the more bonfires work as warp points, is making getting around a bit easier at this point of the game.

I've had a 360 pad for my PC since Geometry Wars came out on Steam, which was before I bought a 360. Some games just need one. Buy one.

It's also very handy for emulation.

You have to approach it from a purists perspective where consoles are child's toys for childish children. Few commentwats on Cack, Bogroll, Shitglitter "own a console unironically".

I think this just proves once and for all that PC gaming is fraught with danger and fiddliness, and that consoles are better.

I mean, yeah, you can bundle together a decent rig for £349 that more than outpowers the current crop of SEVEN YEAR OLD console hardware, but you have to buy fucking peripherals now as well?

Yay me.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Sanctuary Guardian killed. Whether you could cut of his tail or not I never managed to find out. Because I only ever managed to get one hit in on it. Once I figured out how to survive the first 30 seconds and when he was a bit vulnerable, I died. Due to running out of healing items. Then when I returned with more than 5 estus. I died, because finding a gap to heal was tricky. Quick, aggressive, no cover, very painful ranged attacks. Despite that his arse is now mine and I'm talking to a mushroom

I just remembered that my save game was just before the final boss so hopefully I'll be able to scurry right over to the new shit. October seems so far away...
