Claghorn. Best surname ever.

Glad you guys are ok. Hurrah indeed for seatbelts, safety seats and the use thereof.

Seatbelt fun fact: You are far more likely to injure yourself if you have a crash if you are wearing a seatbelt. You're far less likely to die, however.

I assume that five point harnesses are safer still, from the 'not being dead' point of view, but three points are the trade off between convenience and safety?

Five points without a roll cage are more likely to kill you than 3 points, as you can't duck if the car rolls...

Fearsomely better in a head-on, though.
Would I be right in saying that most cars have a strong enough safety cell to hold up if they roll nowadays?

Pretty sure it's true - but obviously only for a given value of 'injured'.

If by "injured" you mean "not dead", then yeah, you're more likely to get merely "injured" than killed if you're wearing a seatbelt, but that wasn't what he seemed to be suggesting.

I think the science says that in any given accident that doesn't kill you, the seatbelt itself gives additional injury possibilities. Particularly as in many cases they aren't worn optimally.

It's that you're more likely to be injured if you're wearing a seatbelt than if you're not wearing into a seatbelt - but that's because it takes into account abrasions and contusions from the seatbelt doing its job during very minor collisions, I believe.

alternatively, you're more likely to be injured if you're wearing a seatbelt because you're not dead. Right? Because yhou get a fuck of a lot more minor contusions and that getting chucked around the car or tossed out of it. Whilst being dead.

Yeah. I think you're confusing 'fun fact' with 'advising people to not wear seatbelts', here.

Well, but it's a fun fact like "you're 100% more likely not to die of AIDS if you die of lung cancer".

Clearly you got bored with the post before you got to the second sentence. I'll try to be more succinct in the future :)

Not really. A far closer fun fact would be "smokers are far less likely to catch a cold than non smokers - though infinitely more likely to die of lung cancer".

Only if the FUN FACT for the first half of that is they're less likely to catch a cold by virtue of dying earlier. Which isn't even true - they'd be less likely to catch AS MANY colds.

sorry I should have been here for that discussion having done the fieldwork
I have quite good injuries from the seatbelt, I was wearing a low cut thing so where it was on bare skin I had very bad scraping / burning, where it was on my top I'm the colour of Eeyore (according to my nephews) - I am however not dead
Steve was wearing his as well and doesn't have the slightest injury from his

re the car cage, it held super well.

Would be interesting to see how the new child seat laws have effected the injury stats. iirc with no booster seat a child is far more likely to have internal injuries from the belt itself. (Although obviously far less fatal than going though the front windscreen)

I read about this - the two main reasons they need a booster seat is because otherwise the top of the belt goes across their neck, and they also run the risk of sliding out from under it.

Fun fact: Kids can go in a five (or more) point harness without a booster seat.

It might seem an odd yay.

But I have now managed to set a Standing order up with the CSA, it has only taken since April 2010 with endless failed DD.

They really are a hateful org...

Looks like I am going to be moving to London in January. I've been flathunting in Manchester for a while, but would have liked to move to London, just couldn't really afford rent.

Luckily, an old flatmate from Uni bought a (fairly nice) house in London, and his housemate is moving out in January, so he is looking for someone else to help cover the mortgage.

£300 a month rent, so it's even cheaper than the places I was looking at in Manchester. He said it's mine if I want it, and I do!

Er... I got a new phone recently, and some nice sunglasses from the airport at Singapore.

Small things, really, but I'm very pleased with them.

Oh, and work seems to be going quite well, I feel like I'm actually close to achieving things*, and my team are working very well. Dare I say it... they might even respect me....

*I spent a long time cleaning my desk and around the area, sorting the filing properly this time, and binning old stuff that had accumulated - that was quite rewarding.

YAY!

On the day of travelling to the Cottage, we went and viewed a house for rent, liked it, and put in an offer of the asking rental price. The agents would have taken a holding deposit at the time, as the offer was obviously fine, but the landlord was out of the country. When she returned on the Monday, they had decided to rent it out to their friend instead. Boo.

Today we went and saw a pretty much identical house (it's actually opposite the other one), apart from with a better garden and a garage. This time we've been actually allowed to get it, and on December 3rd we'll be moving in.

Woop woop!

(it's 50quid more expensive than the one originally wanted, but still 150quid a month less than we're paying at the moment. Plus it has three bedrooms. And a friggin' garage!).

It's in Kidbrooke, stalking-type fans.

Nice one, fella.

Also in yay news, a year after the missus was told her prescription wasn't stable enough to have her eyes lazored, they've just given her the go ahead to get it done in early December.
