Does anyone else count their knuckles to see how many days are in a month? I still do that.

I still only have ten knuckles no matter what month it is.

Knuckle is "long", gap is "short".

So do I, but I can't get out of the habit of counting my knuckles.

I also now know how to spell necessary, but I'll still do the "never eat cheese eat salad sandwiches and remain young" thing in my head as I type it.

Russia are going to the moon :

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/russia-ju ... 55524.html

Quote:

Russia just announced that it's sending humans to the moon

Before 2030, Russia plans to land its first cosmonauts on the moon, and Europe wants a piece of the action.

They're a little late for the great space race of the 1960s, but the mission is an admirable push for the reignited interest in manned deep-space travel.

On Tuesday, at a space and technology conference in Moscow, the head of Roscosmos Energia — Russia's version of NASA — announced: "A manned flight to the moon and lunar landing is planned for 2029."

And the European Space Agency, which made history last year by landing the first spacecraft on a comet, is teaming up.

"We have an ambition to have European astronauts on the moon," Bérengère Houdou, head of the lunar-exploration group at ESA's European Space Research and Technology Center, recently told BBC News. "There are currently discussion at international level going on for broad cooperation on how to go back to the moon."

Russia and Europe have expressed interest in establishing a permanent base on the moon, and they have already begun taking the fist steps toward this goal.

Last month, Roscosmos announced that it will send a lander, Luna 25, to the moon's south pole in 2024. After touchdown, the lander will investigate the lunar surface for future lunar bases.

The Luna 25 mission was initially proposed in 1997 and has since suffered a number of delays, but it seems that with Europe's aid the mission could finally get the jump-start it needs. Construction on the spacecraft has already begun, Tech Insider reported.

This collaborative effort is a welcomed contrast to the lonely space race of the mid-20th century. While Europe and Russia raise their collective eyes to the moon, NASA continues its quest for a farther, more dangerous mission: Mars.

Nah, 'cats' is easy to remember how to spell.

I don't understand why we use months at all. JUst number the weeks. It is so much easier.

No, name all the weeks. But have an official Week Naming consortium that every November decides what all the following year's weeks are going to be called.

In related news, this was very interesting.

Individual names for each day in a year; and enforce a uniqueness policy that requires a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters.

When you're laminating something, there's only 2 things you need to know. When to put the sheet in and when it comes out.

How on earth has someone I work with managed to get 3 sheets stuck inside the laminator with another one being fed in? My mind has been blown.

How did they not realise that their laminated sheet hadn't come out?

It is a long haul to move through the qualifying events to be eligible for the Ticket to Ride World Championships.

Christ, German airports are SLOW! Amazing levels of inefficiency at security check and the boarding is going at 1 person per 3 minutes. At this rate I could have walked home by the time I make it into the plane!

This morning someone misconfigured our UAT environment so that, instead of resolving to a dummy address, emails would actually be sent to real users. We found this out after I'd sent a test email which included a PDF of a stupid internal course completion certificate with my name and id printed on it. It's been delivered to 1400 people globally and, so far, viewed by about 1200. Amusingly, as of a change I made only yesterday, when anyone looks me up on the internal phone book, as people tend to do in these circumstances, they'll get a profile pictures that's an image of Fallout vault boy giving them a big smug thumbs up.

If stuff had gone out to external people then that would be a very real possibility. As it stands though it's only internal users and, luckily, one of them flagged it up after I'd only sent out one mail so I suspect a wrist slapping is as far as it gets. If it was me I'd be concerned that this is even possible because whatever blocking mechanism is employed should be so low level that it can't be bypassed by something as simple as an environment refresh (which is what I'm led to believe was the root cause).

Lol. Now a lot of the users are panicing over this email because it looks weird and has a weird attachment so they're forwarding it to our security guys for review. And they're then beating a path to the door of the very senior guy who's name I published the mail under to ask him what he's playing at. He's really pleased about this entire situation as you can imagine.

Never ever ever put embarrassing data into any test environment! Always use data that won't matter if it leaks into prod, because there's always a nonzero risk of a leak.

I have an extreme example of this: a colleague used his own personal credit card to test book a one-way flight to Zurich in a UAT environment... except he was in prod, and the flight was unrefundable.

I'm not particularly embarrassed that people know I passed an utterly pointless and bullshit important internal course, but your point is well made.

Both are right. It's purposefully ambiguous. He is definitely using the thumb measure as he is holding his hand thumb out, pointing at the explosion. If you give a thumbs up you draw your hand sideways, to give the thumbs up in profile: that's not what he is doing. However, the image is presented at about 45 degrees, so from the viewers angle the gesture is almost side on, looking to US like a thumbs up.

He is also holding one eye closed, which you must do to line something in the close foreground (thumb) with something in the distance (explosion) but it is also made to look like a cheeky wink because of the smile on his face.

It's cleverly done, and is too well balanced not to be purposeful

The logo has been the same going back to the first Fallout game in the 90s, but this theory about measuring the sizes of mushroom clouds only seems to have appeared in the last few years. The early history of Fallout has been extensively and obsessively written about in loads of places. If the mushroom cloud thing was intentional, I think someone would have said long before now. I think it's a retcon.

I love it when Beex pulls together to reach one another's goals.
