I know, but Kissyfur's exact words were:

which is true.

But entirely irrelevant to what we were actually talking about, as well you know.

I'm not so sure. This started with him complaining about the incorrect usage of a word and as 'proof' that 'they' had 'fixed' it someone copy and pasted a definition from some online dictionary. All that actually proves is that whomever maintains that dictionary had updated their definition, in and of itself it doesn't mean anything anywhere else.

It was Mr Russell "complaining", and me that pulled the definition. Just because something's online doesn't mean it's incorrect - you can also look it up in the OED if you like.

Then Mr Chris lumbered in and got it wrong, which he does literally all the time ;)

I'm mulling over, at an abstract level, the concept of 'proving' the changed meaning of a word by quoting a dictionary definition and how potentially troublesome that is.

As far as I'm aware, there's no 'official' English language. Oxford University Press can put what the fuck they like in their dictionary, and so can Collins etc.

That's actually always annoyed me, especially as I sometimes have a weird mental block around translating month names into their number. September should be seven (as 'sept' is seven in French) and October should be eight (because oct) but they stubbornly refuse to line up properly. I don't mind December being twelve because it's easy to remember that with it being that last month in a year.

You can use this one weird trick to help you remember:

- Get 12 prostitutes.
- Make sure their names are Janice, Felicity, Mary, April, May, June, Julia, Audrey, Selena, Octavia, Norma and Debra.
- Have sex with them in that order.
- When you need to remember a month, think "who was the eighth girl I ever fucked", and ping - Audrey = August!

You're welcome!

It's one of those facts that is passed around.

Not really the case though. July and august were renamed to that from quintilis and sextilis (or something like that), not added. January and february were added long before he existed

And March was the first month of the year, hence why february does weird length changing things.

Looking out of my window that would seem entirely appropriate today.

I don't like that the months don't have an equal number or pattern of days. What I suggest is that we have nine months of 36 days each, six weeks of a 6 day week per month (4 work days, two day weekend), and then the final, 10th month can be 41/42 (leap years) days long, with the additional five days all given over to the festive season and holidaying/beer pong.
