(Or alternatively, they took it from the dreamcast, which had done the same daft thing)
Apparently, it is wired only.

Baffling.
Worst of both worlds, really. It has a not overly reliable connection via micro usb, as compared to the more solid connection usually found on wired pads,so it'll break quite quickly too.
So it has a micro USB cable attached but once that's not attached.. It's not wireless? What's the point of that then? Weird.
February's games with gold.

Forget everything else, Split Second is on there which makes me very happy indeed!
Crazy Taxi would be good but no licensed music from the original so pointless.
Yep... To be honest, I find that playing it on anything but the original Dreamcast is a hollow experience.

Gamecube is good still.
Split/Second was a joy to play. Having said that the only time I ever got a shitload of abuse online was playing it.

I really enjoyed the game so I was intent on maxing it which meant I was working my way the on-line races to get to rank 1, but this was after a significant number of hours completing the single player and getting 1st on all the courses so I knew them intimately. Therefore I smashed the fuck out of most of the people I came across on line and this one fella was outraged that I had passed him, accusing me of "fuckin cheatin" many times because my car "teleported" in front of his. I was just too fucking fast for him to see of course. Dick.
Only time, eh? You lucky sausage. :D

Well the only time I have had serious abuse directed solely at me. Heard plenty of course.

I didn't even get any abuse when I was in Battlefield 2 one time and squad-spawned into a jeep, which I then promptly drove into the enormous ravine the sqaud had been perching on the edge of while picking people off. There was a chorus of "What?..." followed by them just laughing about it.

You can put the crazy taxi soundtrack on Spotify and mute the music on Xbox One, and use custom soundtracks on 360.

PC version also lets you mod in the original music.

Sometimes it's nice.

Is it, though?
It's the exception rather than the rule, granted.

But I have had a few good times when I've been thrown in with nice folk.
Spec Ops: The Line
The Darkness II
The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom

Now available via BC
Bryan Cranston?
Spec ops: the line.

Is that the good one? I can't remember. If it is, it doesn't matter anyway as I've already completed it so I probably won't play it again.

But if it is the good one and you haven't played it, I'd highly recommend it.
I have no idea if it’s the specific good one you’re thinking of, but yes, SO:TL is very good.
I've checked and it is the one I was thinking about. Thanks Doc!
XBOX GOLD FOR GAMES MARCH:

Superhot
Trial of the Blood Dragon.
Brave
Quantum conundrum

Gah!

Because I want Burnout Paradise Remastered I have begun investigations into this XBox One X business.

I have been to the local GAME and they have the X in stock and ready to go, 1TB console + extra pad + a game for £449.

A local telly emporium can do me a very nice 50 inch 4K Panasonic smart telly for £600. (Crucially it has optical audio out so I can connect it to my existing splendid 5:1 speaker setup.)

It's a lot of cash to play Burnout Paradise Remastered and my old XBLA collection. But a lot less cash than getting a new car. So in a way I'd be saving thousands of pounds by purchasing this console + telly combo.
You're not gonna get 5.1 out of that optical out.

Boo!

I'm not sure how it works TBH, HDMI from the X carries (up to) 7:1 audio into the telly (as I understand it), but the telly won't pipe 5:1 back out of the optical out?

Does the X have a native optical out?

Maybe this is a job for the GOOGLE-O-TRON.
The standard Xbox one has an optical out so I would presume the Xbox one X does too.

Can't you run the One X HDMI through your amp?

No, it only has two optical audio inputs. They're actually branded as Pioneer 'XBox 360' speakers.

In fact, Amazon still have the listing for them. I got them when I got my 360, so back in early 2007. They still work perfectly and have a really nice sound. It was a bit of a faff getting all the wiring in properly (especially the rears) so I'm loathed to replace them if I can get away with it.

The original Bioshock on 360 was scary as fuck with full surround sound.

Optical SP/DIF has very narrow bandwidth by modern standards and can only carry 5.1 via some obsolete codecs. HDMI devices typically put out 5.1 or 7.1 via a modern codec or unencoded PCM. Neither can be directly re-transmitted via optical. Most TVs will downmix the HDMI carried audio to 2.0 and output that to the optical port. Some, if fed a compatible old surround codec like Dolby Pro Logic over HDMI, will output it over optical; but not many and probably no modern ones I suspect. Getting that working is a crapshoot.

As Vision says, the optical output on the Xbox is a better bet. But device switching may be difficult if the speaker set only has one input.

The GOOGLE-O-TRON agrees.

I spy an optical out.

Well, according to the official website it has IR out, if that is the same as optical out.

Cheers Doc very informative.

I think I'll be OK, the X could have one of the optical inputs on the speakers (so I'll get proper 5:1), and the feed from the telly can have the other for all other inputs, if they're rejigged to 2.0 then so be it.
Any reason you're not considering a PS4?

If I was choosing now between One X and PS4 Pro, I'd be going for the Xbox.

So would I. But it's entirely academic anyway.

Having a good chunk of my old 360 catalogue available is a big draw (especially the XBLA stuff), the X is undeniably the more powerful console, and I hate Sony's gamepad design but love Microsoft's gamepad design. (Always felt like that, right since the PS2/XBox days.)

Also, I quite like the industrial look of the X.

It's a better console imo.

How many console exclusives can you point to, though? How about if you remove stale iterations of franchise games? And how many cross-platform games that run meaningfully better on Xbox? And finally, how many friends do you have on Xbox as opposed to PSN?

I like the look of the X's hardware, but Microsoft has only un-screwed about a quarter of the pooch with nice hardware. It's stunning how expertly it ballsed this up.

Much like Sony did with the PS3. It seems like only one company can get it right at once.
Unlike Nintendo who get it right all of the time!

There aren't none (that new pirates game looks swish too, and hey, maybe Crackdown 3 will be good although its long time in development hell isn't a good sign) but there's not a lot either. Nowhere near enough to justify £450 and a third console for me, anyway. I think if you're in the market for a second console after a PS4, a Switch is probably a much better idea.
Not if you want to play Burnie P.

I don't disagree with anyone, BTW, I was just curious.
Doctor Glyndwr wrote:

I think that would be the key for me. I've no particularly allegiance either way between Microsoft and Sony and their consoles, so if I was choosing between PS4 and Xbox One, it's be PS4 as I hardly know anyone with an Xbox.

(Of course in the fullness of time I'll probably end up with both, but no rush)

PUBG
Halo 5 is fantastic co-op too. Really great fun.

The X1X is a great bit of kit though. It’s a great size, looks fab, has proper buttons, it’s quiet and doesn’t pump out too much heat. The PSPro is larger, not as aesthetically pleasing and really belts out heat out it’s back end. If you’ve got your console in a small enclosure like me you’ll probably worry about melting your wires at the back with the Pro.
