Sat in a Fiesta ST last night. It's no Focus ST, but at least the seat goes a couple of inches lower than the Twingo, so I'm test-driving it tonight.

After all, what's the worst that can happen?

Seriously, I think you should go for it. Chances of it going massively tits up are low, and yous eem to like it.

Eh, we'll see. The seating position was a lot better than the Twingo but it's still closer to that than the Focus. It's reviewing stunningly well so maybe the drive will change my mind, but just from sitting in it I don't think it's going to be worth it.

The US is getting a 5-door, 197bhp one whereas the only "choice" here is a 3-door 180bhp (with better quoted mpg). I'd rather have the 5-door. Might be coming soon as confused.com lists it.

Oh, and in addition to lower tax and fuel consumption, insurance is £50 a year cheaper too.

Why the Fiesta and not the Focus? Is there a big price difference?

Also the idea of having two Focus STs sat outside the house seems really really weird. If the Fiesta's not perfect I'm going to go and sit in a Cayman S.

Edit: Actually, a base Focus is £21995 and they're still doing the £1500 discount for credit on it, but only £250 on a £16995 Fiesta, so less than £4k difference. Though the Focus is so unwieldy it needs parking sensors, and they're in the optional City Pack (£350)... which is only available on the ST-2 (£1500).

Still, the Fiesta really isn't looking like a good buy there.

I've already done the money pit. The only reason I'm considering a 5 year old Porsche is their alleged un-super-car-like reliability (and fuel economy).

After that it's a 2009 535d (hoping for un-M-like reliability) or, as desperate outsider, a brand-new VXR8 GTS.

Ummm... if you want reliability, then a Cayman isn't your best bet at all, the cylinder linings will score at some point. Lots of advice around to only buy one with the bombproof OPC 2 year warranty.

To be fair, the 2.7 versions are much less likely to go (they still have the IMS bearing issue I believe though) so as long as you avoid the 3.4 S you should be fine

Huh, the Fiesta is actually really good, apart from a full-chat 1st/2nd change.

Firm but all the reviews saying its harsh at low speeds haven't been in an RS Cup, its lovely to me! PLENTY of grunt, nice driving set up once you're moving and not in a showroom. Sounds horrible in the cabin, disabling the symposer shite would be a day 1 job; it sounds fake in the focus but shitty ricer balls in the fiesta. on the other hand, open the window and the turbo/dv are clearly audible when beans are in play, which isnt the case in focus. Seats aren't as bolstered as the focus but in a good way. they do make it nigh impossible to get in/out of the back (though space is alright back there, even if its a bit bumpier and the belt digs in slightly). Boot is bigger than the twingo with seats forward too, though it doesn't do the flip trick.

In all, its like a cost-reduced Focus. Funny that.

Only offered 7500 for the Twingo (unseen) but gave me a 750 discount on an ST2.

I may have found my new car, if I can get another 500-750 for the twingo. Would have to wait til June/july though.

Sweet! Even if it goes bang in six months, it's a lot of car for £1k

Local independent has given me a quote of just over £600 for a full service, new plugs, gearbox oil and filter change and to fix the leak. Doesn't seem too bad a price for all of that, so i'll get all that done and see what she feels like after that.

When it comes time to sell, I imagine you might even get a decent offer from webuyanycar, thanks to that number plate

There's a 911 in Shrewsbury somewhere with GH05T EM as it's numberplate.

Best numberplates I saw was about 20 years ago in Surrey, two 911s parked on a drive, one had the plate NOT 1, the other had BUT 2
