Your solution was incompatible with the Give credit to MaliA as he's always right scheme. I took the raw ore of your thinking and smelted it into an ideas ingot to be forged on the anvil of concepts.

I agree there's a million and one other things to take into account (advertising, for a start), but how else can you define how good something is, short of asking everyone in the world their opinion?

So we live in a country where McDonalds make the best food, Westlife make the best music, Carling make the best alcoholic drink, Coke make the best soft drink, etc.

How sad.

Out of curiosity, that overproof mojito you liked. It's a lot worse and less tasty than a Bacardi Breezer, right?

As soon as you start pricing things differently, or making things less or more widely available, the "most popular = best" thing stops working.

Music / films etc. are all similarly priced and widely available, allowing direct comparison.

Then take into account the things that have the biggest advertising budget put behind them, and how fair that is.

You said Music / films etc. are all similarly priced and widely available, allowing direct comparison.

I take issue with that as a film with the exact same distribution deal may receive different advertising, therefore generating more sales for one over the other. Thereby you can't use popularity as a measure of decency.

But a lot of advertising doesn't directly equate to sales, with the obvious exceptions. There's plenty of other factors involved in a 'buzz', the advertising industry is built upon the lie that the buzz is a result of advertising. It's the other way around.

I find Frankie Boyle very funny

His material is very bad taste and if a mate told me something in the same vein I'm not sure I would laugh as much

Odd thing Comedy!

That's weird. If APoD told me a bad taste joke, I'd probably laugh - if Boyle did it, I'd probably stab my own eyes out.

Frankie Boyle has had me loling and wtfing in equal measure. Like what I've seen of his stand up but that sketch show he did was piss poor.

Tramadol Nights?

The stand-up stuff was all from his existing material, although a lot of it was still good.

The sketches were almost completely awful, but a handful of them were absolutely fucking brilliant IMO. (And some of them had really good ideas but just went on too long or didn't develop them.)

If I should find anyone offensive it's Boyle, because he does a lot of ill-informed autism 'jokes'/stereotyping, and of course AE Jnr is autistic, but I'm just like, 'Whatever, he's a notoriously near-the-knuckle comedian on a late night Channel 4 show, chances are everyone's going to find something to offend them if they try hard enough.'

I like Michael Mcintyre and don't really understand all the hate he gets on here. I think he's a good observational comedian who always makes me laugh and suitable for watching with family most of the time as well. Going to see him in November and really looking forward to it, never seen a comedian live before so think a night of dinner, drinks and Michael McIntyre live sounds pretty wonderful!

Also love Eddie Izzard, different style of comedy but I adore him. Don't like offensive comedians like Frankie Boyle. Agree with Trooper when he said he hated Russell Brand then heard some of his stuff-I hated him from what I saw of him on telly then I saw him as a guest on another show and he really changed my opinion. Still haven't made myself actually listen to any of his stuff though. Some of the comedians mentioned like Alan Carr who do talk shows, I've never heard do stand up but I really enjoy his show.

Finally, been trying to think of a female comedian I like and not thought of one really. Except Ellen, and again that's for her chat show rather than her stand up, but she is very funny on the chat show.

I can't stand that horrible, horrible voice he puts on. I saw him on some comedy panel show or other from years ago, and he spoke normally and was 1000% more bearable.

Mcintere makes me chuckle occasionally, but I really think he's too smug and that kills it for me

I stick with McGuinness being the worst.

I have an account with Victor Chandler, but I refuse to use it due to his advertising.

I've said it before, I hate everything about Michael McIntyre, except the words that come out of his mouth. The "oh God, please love me!" stage persona, the voice, the delivery, the whole nine yards. But the words are very, very well written. The observations are spot on. I would say funny, but I don't laugh at it because I can't get through the rest.

Someone said John Bishop was media managed (or summat - I'm not reading six pages). He started out the same time as me (which is a bit like feeling you could be a rock star and then finding yourself on the same open circuit as an up and coming band calling themselves U2 and realising just how far you are from making it). I'd say his problem is that he isn't quite slick enough yet - he's brilliant on stage but still pretty stiff and awkward in front of a camera. He's a storyteller, so he needs to have 5, 10 mins of uninterrupted jokes. I mean, he's as fast as anyone with a quick gag, but he is best live in a decent sized gig. (I ignore the enormodomes, which are just awful, awful places to watch comedy. But who the hell is going to turn down an easy couple of hundred grand a night?)

I don't Mcintyre - I'm a bit like Plissken in that I like the content but not the delivery (but clearly I dislike the the delivery less).

I remember a John Bishop routine about taking a fridge to the dump which was fucking hilarious.

Any videos about of you doing stand-up, Pliss?

Oh, hah. This is exactly how I feel about him. I hate his persona so much, it took me a long time to realise just how good his material was; now, if I catch some of his comedy, I just feel conflicted about it.
