You can play without installing anything by following the Java links from World of Spectrum , if you want to download it and play it on your machine i'd suggest either :

ZXSpin :

http://www.zxspin.com/

Or

Speculator :

http://www.spectaculator.com/

There are plenty of others but I've found those two pretty much play everything and are configurable enough to allow for normal keyboard settings even when the game itself does not.

Better get my arse in gear as if you beat me again this week I will lose my league position!

Scores updated and I've done a more reasonable 1390.

Level 3 is a bitch. Not so much a difficulty curve as a cliff.

Advert for the 'win a vcr' :

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/showmag. ... 800085.jpg

The games are :

The Mountains of Ket :

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek.cgi?regexp=^Mountains+of+Ket$&pub=^Incentive+Software+Ltd$&loadpics=1

The Temple of Vran :

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek.cgi?regexp=^Temple+of+Vran$&pub=^Incentive+Software+Ltd$&loadpics=1

And The Final Mission :

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek.cgi?regexp=^Final+Mission%2c+The$&pub=^Incentive+Software+Ltd$&loadpics=1

None of which are suitable for league play :-)

There is a bit of luck here for the way the screen moves , if it goes the right way you can just keep on hoovering up the points , if it goes the wrong way you can get stuck in edges or never actually get close enough to the points.

The other main scoring hint i can give is after you scroll off the screen when you come back everything is there to be collected again including the invisible grass - so knowing where that is makes a difference there are small sections if it scrolls you around the right way you can really make big scores on the first two levels before it gets that fast.

One thing I cant work out is the bonus score - I typically get either 110 or 105 , but have had 300 once and as low as 80 at other times ?

I tried looking online for an explanation of this, but alas I couldn't find one.

Cheers for the tips. My main problem is still surviving level 3!

Another slight improvement and catching Dimmers - also during this game i managed to scroll quite far up and saw a long row of the spikey things which had what looked like a very long row of plums above it - loads of points if it actually gets on screen

Right better score and some frustration.

Heres the instructions screen :

Image

And it shows the stuff you can and cannot touch - so what about 'red' walls ? , not on the list - I thought they would be similar to black ones but oh no , they kill you straight off - and i found the extra life as well (although didnt collect it)

Still that &"$^ing level 4!
But I'm quite chuffed with this 3,840 :)
The bonus gets doubled if you end in the 'start space' for the next stage (i.e. where you start if you die)

Right - got to level 5 (although a lower score than this one) - what the **** do you do with the big multicolour barrier ?

Can you only cross a specific colour ? , I tried yellow and got splatted on my last life.

Good! I just did 2995 :DD :DD :DD

Playing it directly on the laptop keyboard and screen vastly helped. The Apple wireless keyboard and Dell monitor were too laggy. I can see why FPS fans get so worked up about delays.

A missed opportunity here - you could've used the SAM version.

Not really, the competition rules state CPC, Spectrum and C64 only. Reason is that it keeps the number of emulators to a minimum and many people won't need to download anything. With the Spectrum (and possibly the CPC although I need to investigate it) you can even play in your browser.

Blast it, I win. I was actually hoping someone would make a last minute dash for it. Despite trying I couldn't get anywhere near the score I achieved for a second time!

I'll keep it simple. This weeks game is...

Image

Bubble Bobble on the Speccy. Play online here:

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0000722

Sorry it's another Speccy game but not much time for me to sort another format out. Will sort the scores + the league table when I can.

Just to bump this as it got buried over Christmas. Bubble Bobble is this weeks game. Get your scores in. Note it's a really good week to catch me this week and next as I'm away from Monday and may not have a net connection! If I do it will be GPRS.

I've also updated the league table and no places have changed!

The Excellent 8 Bit League (sponsored by Amsoft):

Week 5 of 12

3 - Runcle - 10
4 - Dimrill - 9

7 - Mr Dom - 4
7 - Devilssnowman - 4
8 - Sistersanta - 2
9= - Craster - 1
9= - Lave - 1
