Watched Eastern Promises last night (again). It's good, but not as good as A History of Violence which was Cronenberg's previous film. Basically, to me it all feels a little enigmatic - all the characters are a bit thinly drawn for my taste. |

Rhona Mitra can be a bit bland though. She really lacks character in Doomsday and doesn't have much more in Underworld. Still better than Kate though. |

Watched BLACK DYNAMITE (dodgy dvd screener) earlier this evening. A very funny and well-done affectionate spoof of Blaxpoitation movies of the 70's (such as Shaft etc.). Lots of nice little touches including authentic bad-acting from some of the support cast, a boom mike being clearly visible on screen while the hero is giving a macho speech (distracting him mid-flow as he notices the mic) etc. Oh, and lots of daft kung fu. Not perfect, drags a wee bit in places, but very good overall. 8/10 |

I don't know if it's been mentioned and it probably well has but I don't really fancy reading 48 pages to find out, but I watched Frailty for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago. What a fantastic film with some proper bo mental twisting in it. The odd part is I must have put 500 of the buggers on the shelves when I worked as a SM for BBV years ago but never did get around to watching it. |

It's a "dvd screener" (by scene group PrisM). Usually these aren't quite as good in picture/sound quality as a dvd rip and they often have blurred-out timers, black & white scenes every 10 minutes or so, scrolling "property of" messages etc. This one is perfect though. It has none of the above (ie. it's completely "clean"), both picture & sound are great, and you're not likely to be able to tell the difference between it and any dvd rips released in the future. Basically, if it had been labelled as a dvd-rip, no-one would be the wiser (apart from the fact that the dvd probably isn't due out for months....) |

Changeling - Not what I was expecting at all, very interesting, yet somehow emotionally unengaging. Well worth a watch, though. Frost/Nixon - Absolutely riveting movie, despite knowing the end already. Loved it. |

I think I will watch Doomsday and try to spot my old street then. I saw a few minutes of the film one day on Sky Movies and was quite tickled to see Queen Street Station all Doomsday'd up. |

Well to be fair the Doomsday related graffiti on the old school was much nicer and more interesting than what could usually be found there. You could tell that the street had been madeover for a film because there weren't any Buckfast bottles lying around as well. |

Inspired by Die Hard 4 being on TV, I finally watched the Director's Cut. I can indeed confirm that it is a proper Die Hard Film with swears, blood and violins. Example? Sure. Original: "Did I get a thank you? No, I got (quick cut away) crucified!" Director's Cut: "Did I get a thank you? No, I got a fuck you!" Ah, much better. |

On the plane to Vegas I watched: The Hangover (again) - still very funny indeed. Especially if you're on your way to a Stag Do in Vegas! The Hurt Locker - really excellent movie. Strong performances by all the lead characters, and it's extremely tense at times. I laughed that Evangeline Lily (Kate from Lost) got one of the higher billings. She's in the film for about thirty seconds. On the plane home from Vegas I watched: Up - Amazing. Quite possibly the best Pixar film yet, and definitely the most grown up. The opening montage is just beautiful, and the themes going throughout the film are superbly handled. And Doug is amazing. I love him. "I do not like the Cone of Shame!" Moon - also good. Sam Rockwell is great in it, but a lot of it was kinda familiar territory for a hardened SF fan, so it wasn't anything knew or stunning. Still, directed and acted very well, though I would have preferred a less well known voice than Kevin Spacey in his role. |

Twilight was far shitter than I expected. And I wasn't expecting much. The lead girl character is an empty vessel. She has nothing, no character, nothing. The lead vampire guy has is just a twat with the eyebrows of a Muppet. The whole setting is just grey and dull. Nothing fucking happens at all. Nothing. Until the last ten minutes or so, where something happens, but it's not any more interesting than the rest of it. It's just appalling. Awful. I just don't get it. Watched Zack & Miri Make A Porno afterwards. Not sure what's it like taken out of context, but after Twilight it was a hilarious, lively romp. |

Been watching the Tudors, as i'm already in season 3. Completely out of the windows as far as accuracy and authenticity goes (too much shaven bodies, some fake tits and overall too much shiny stuff), but still fun. I just don't understand the quantity of horse-faced blondes. What went through the mind of the casting director? |

I'm a fool. MrsP wouldn't even know what Twilight was unless I saw the chick from in a picture and though 'hmm, she's tasty, I'll download that and have a watch'. MrsP loved it, insisted that I buy her the books and is even hinting at me taking her to the pictures to see the new one. Like I said. I'm a fool. Twilight I've not seen, but my 15 year old daughter and 18 year old niece (who's over from NZ and staying with us for a few weeks) are big Twilight fans. I read the Twilight series of books and although I couldn't be bothered with any of the soppy angsty 'oh how I love him' bits, I still enjoyed them hugely as did a large amount of my friends aged between 21-27. I also really enjoyed the film and I am looking forward to the next one. Can we get a wee Dimlie blowing a raspberry? |

Shawshank and The Body are technically novellas though, ripe for expansion. As books are usually cut down to fit on the silver screen, a chance to add to a story must be a delight for a screenwriter. As for LoTR, that was given so much screen time that it didn't feel cut down. Most of the stuff that was left out was unnecessary to the main thrust of the plot anyway. What I'm trying to say is: Word, yo. |
