Seems nice! Cut/copy/paste and the Spotlight doodad are particularly welcome. Grim... has his MMS of a hot chick, as demanded.

Wow. AT&T are backing down and allowing people who bought the 3G in the first three months to upgrade to the 3G S! I did not see that coming.

Me too, only problem is that my iPhone won't now work as a phone, as it'll only let me make emergency calls, and won't talk to iTunes. The error message is about the iTunes store timing out, but it works fine if I actually go to the iTunes store within iTunes, it's just the iPhone 'tab' that times out.

So basically, at the moment, I have an iPhone shaped brick, as I can't get into the OS and can't make calls.

(The update process all seemed to be going swimmingly, but it was on the 'return' to iTunes that I got a message 'We could not complete your iTunes store request' - I'm a bit worried though, 'cause all I'm getting now is the emergency call option and the 'connect me to iTunes' graphic on my iPhone.)

That means your phone is de-activated, Atrocity, which is routine on a full flash. It'll sort itself out once iTunes can talk to the mothership. Damned annoying though. I suspect Apple's infrastructure wasn't up to all those millions of people after all.

My own fault in a way 'cause I do actually need my phone to work as a phone, so shouldn't have taken the chance on a software update on Day 1. It's extra-annoying though 'cause I'm on overnight call for the server room this week, and my mobile number is the only one the call-out centre has for me, if they don't get an answer, it goes to the next person on the list, who isn't on call so won't be best pleased if they get one. (I can only get called after 9pm, so I figured starting the upgrade at 7:30pm was safe.......)

I'd hoped Apple would be a bit different when it comes to crap like this happening, it's routine with Microsoft, never go on day one, but it appears it's the same here as well - except even more so, because it's actually fucking bricked my phone until it can report home.

I've done a bit of Googling, it appears this isn't a unique situation when a major iPhone upgrade comes out - who could have predicted such a rush for the massively anticipated and hyped V3 of the iPhone software? :?:

See, if all you people had upgraded to 3.0 last week like I did, you wouldn't be having these problems :P

Now to wait for Dev Team to release their jailbreaker, and for TomTom to release their satnav gubbins.

What I'm doing, see, is waiting until the initial rush is over. After a few days I'll update it if it looks safe from a "still being able to jailbreak" POV.

Dev Team have already jailbroken 3.0 successfully, they're just waiting for the official release before they release the necessary tools.

You might want to reboot it. Mine has done that once or twice (with older firmware) and I then noticed it drained the battery in about 30 minutes not doing anything.

Running the risk of sounding amazingly dumb here, but how do I send an MMS?

There's nothing in 'messages' apart from basic texting, and going into my camera roll only offers the 'email photo' option, I've even lowered myself to the Apple FAQ:

#photos.sending-a-photo-or-video-in-an-email-or-mms-message">http://www.apple.com/iphone/how-to/inde ... ms-message

And I don't get the video/MMS options it mentions.

I really shouldn't be getting confused with an iPhone, help me Jeebus!

(Oh yes, it activated V3 of the software after over an hour of trying.)

There should be a camera icon next to the text entry box in the Messages app (where you write your SMS to people).

Touch that and then you can take a photo to use in the MMS or pick one off the phone.

Uhh, what's going on? I see MMS in the pop-up menu on a photo, and my Messages app has a little camera icon to the left of the text entry field. What SIM card do you have?

Also: select text feature means I can quote more sensibly on Beex! Woo!

Nope, not getting any of that stuff.

I have a 3G iPhone on the Manx Pronto (Isle of Man) network. (Manx Pronto (i.e. Manx Telecom) being a subsidiary of O2.)

EDIT - I am showing as being on V3 of the software according to the relevant info page on my iPhone.

Have Manx not turned on MMS? Not a carriers did - AT&T didn't. Just because they are an O2 subsidiary doesn't mean they've done the same thing.

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. Frankly, I can't understand why some carriers aren't enabling it. It's a fucking OLD technology, but meh.

The carrier has to turn on MMS for your SIM. O2 do this automatically when you upgrade, others may not. Try texting 'MMS' to 1010. Dunno if it'll work on Manx.

Perhaps the answer. Also: Settings > Messaging > MMS Messaging. Make sure that's turned on.

Ahhh right had to put all this stuff in :D

---------------

General->Network->Cellular Data Network on your iPhone and fill out the MMS section with the following details (note that you need to restart the phone after filling these settings in):

APN: mms.manxpronto.net
Username: mms
Password: mms
MMSC: http://mms.manxpronto.net:8002/
Proxy: 195.010.099.046:8080
MMS Max Message Size: [leave blank]
MMS UA Prof URL: [leave blank]

remember to restart phone, it will ask you to put in your phone number and away you go

----------------

Seems to be working now, guess we're still a bit old-school here :D

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Not.

I've had the best evening. Some of you might already know that my laptop has been powering off randomly (overheating probably). It did it again last night, just after I'd got to the activation part of the process that kept timing out.

I was getting fed up with it doing it at the most inopportune moments, so decided to take it apart and see how dusty it was, except I couldn't get one of the screws off. Thinking I'd left it long enough to cool down, I tried powering it up again, but it refused to boot. So now I have a laptop with most of the screws missing that refuses to power up and a bricked iPhone.

To compound the misery, I couldn't get Sam & Max to download from the marketplace either. :'(

I've brought my computer into work today to see if I have any tools that'll take it apart. What a rubbish evening.

I got home at 6pm, started the download at 6-05pm (I wasn't that desperate, it was just convenient circumstances) and was MMSing my cock to all and sundry by half past. Apparently my boss would like a word.

I'm going to turn it off. Password memorisation on a device as easily lost/stolen as a phone? Not a great idea I think, which is probably why they left it out in the first place.

Bluetooth on my iPod Touch is for wireless speaker usage, and not file transfers as I'd expected. That's wank.

The iPhone can't do Bluetooth OBEX either. I don't know why; perhaps the lack of a user-accessible file system, but that could be worked around if Apple really wanted to. You can at least now send vcards over MMS to share contact details.

It does other stuff though Zardoz. It's accessible to apps, so you'll see (for example) games using it for local multiplayer between devices.

Yeah....

I just wanted to be able to use it like the bluetooth ON EVERY OTHER FUCKING PHONE ON THE MARKET.

Hopefully there will be some new tasty apps to compensate.
