Yep. The "don't list files starting with ." behaviour is why .htaccess has got one, from back in the days when site navigation by plain directory listing was common. I wish Windows would do it.

Well, the worst thing about OS X's implementation specifically, is that if you can't see the file it doesn't copy it. I have a folder in my Dropbox that has a few .htaccess files in it, and when I copy them on to an OS X platform, it copies everything except the .htaccess files.

I wonder, if you do a "cp *.* NewFolder" at the UNIX command line, would it copy those hidden files or ignore them? I'm wondering because it could be down to one of those interface oddities that can happen when you move from command line to GUI. Doing any operation on * at the command line just says 'do this to everything that's here' so it might not matter whether you can 'see' the file. But in a GUI you're only performing operation on files you've selected and you can't select files you can't see so this kind of thing suddenly becomes an issue because you're dealing with a visually based interface.

My stuff is just that I use keyboard shortcuts a lot more (and that has been passed over into my Windows use too). I like the vanishing dock that appears when you move your cursor into its vicinity. I like massive desktop icons (this is in Leopard - might not even apply in Lion). Get Office for Mac if you can. It's miles better than Open Office and Neo Office, or whatever that one's called.

Download window magnet from the app store to replicate the windows 7 'snap' features - but also it can do top/bottom split and snap to quarter screen too.

Take a look at trackpad gestures. I find, with the new Mission Control stuff, that I can hide the Dock altogether and use that for app switching; that saves screen real estate.

I got a little booklet with all the trackpad gestures on - I'm using them already, very useful.

Installed Windows 7 - was reasonably straightforward. Even Windows looks sort of pretty with the Retina display.

Stuff like CMD+R for refreshing web pages I had to look up. F5 doesn't work for that.

To use the function keys as "F" keys rather than the special keys, I believe you need to hold down the "fn" key in the corner.

I know that, but F5 doesn't work for refreshing at all.

You can set keyboard shortcuts in the system preferences somewhere. I changed F5 to refresh. All of the other shortcuts eventually became muscle memory, but Cmd+R never did for some reason.

Using Bootcamp I hope, not Parallels. I know you're intent on stuff like ArmA and Railworks which will work better if it's not being run in virtualization, or so I've read. They're very demanding programs.

As I'm a bit odd, I adjusted my touchpad so the bottom RIGHT corner is left click and vice versa. This is a combination of my iBook (which only had one button) and that I'm used to using a mouse with my right hand so being able to move the touchpad and click with the same hand made sense.

The gestures work in applications and even games too! You can scroll through lists or zoom in and out in EvE with them!

In Windows, the Option key is the Windows key, useful for stuff like Windows-E (open a new Explorer window)

Yep, using Safari at the moment as any other browser appears dog rough at the moment. I expect I'll move to Chrome once they've redrawn everything.

Bizarrely, Internet Explorer is the only browser that looks nice when in Windows - is that because it's integrated into the OS, I assume?

Yes, I've used Bootcamp and just finished installing DoW 2.

I don't know how well the new ones cope but my 2010 MBP gets very hot when running games... 80C or higher sometimes. I've seen no numerous Mac forums that this is normal and that if you hit 90 or above you need to worry.

In any event, you can get fan control programs. I use Lubbo for Windows and SMC for OSX. I don't know how they've been updated to work with the new models.

Opened up iPhoto and took the photos I took on my iPad at the Bxb2 and uploaded them to Flickr, effortlessly. Really impressed so far.

Could you not have done that straight from the iPad?

I got put off by doing that when Ange tried uploading photos to Facebook using her iPad 1. It's probably a lot easier now, to be fair.

The wife has internet connected bathroom scales. They're fucking shit at uploading photos to Flickr.

In yet another shameless attempt to plug my new blog, I've written a post expressing my disappointment in Guided Access in iOS 6 beta 2.

I had high hopes for it being usable as a kiosk mode like you see in Apple stores on their sales iPads, but in it's current form (unless they've changed it significantly in beta3, which was supposedly released yesterday but isn't showing up on my phone yet) it's not really IMO.

When we used iPads to display one of our web tools at a site once we simply put them in cases which covered the top of the screen (ie. the address bar) and the physical buttons.

Yeah, that's what we've had to do in the past but it's not ideal.

Then iPads aren't ideal, I guess.

Thing is, it's clearly possible as the iPads used in Apple Stores run in exactly the kind of kiosk mode I want to see added to iOS - so it's already in there but only Apple can take advantage of it.
