Bit fiddly on keys (particularly the bonus round), but not too shabby.

I've not played the C64 version before. I used to play the Speccy version a fair bit, but I'd have to concede that this version is a lot better.

I don't think I've ever finished 2nd so many times in a fight before!

most of the rounds I got just two or three points, but was able to seperate them, and fight only one of them, who would win, get the bonus, and leave me to pick up the points in the bonus rounds...

When you're tied on hit points, whoever got the lowest points score in the round is out. I guess your moves were lower-scoring ones.

lasermink: 50,700
TheVision: 41,800

I've only had a short time to play this today for the first time all week. I feel like I've wasted my efforts on the other two games when I should have invested that time in IK+ cause it's a freaking joy to play. I've gotta try and find some time to play this later on and even if I don't I might just play for fun some time.

He has his GP2X Wiz thing now... if that does C64 games, he just needs a way of uploading screenshots and he's sorted. :)

I dont know if your iphone or android but you could go for something like photobucket (which has an iphone app) - simply take a picture of the screen - upload it to photobucket and then post the link here ?

I haven't had time to play this since my original go, and now I am too tired... My high score on the Amiga was around 80000-90000 points IIRC, and it was only on that highest score that that little surprise I mentioned earlier was triggered. I don't know if it was only on the Amiga version, though. I will reveal what it was later when this week's challenge is finished (it's absolutely nothing spectacular, mind you).

My word, I've never played such an unreadable, arbitrary game in all my life! O_O

No, wait, make that
<5900>
!!!

Or even
<6900>
!!!

That's enough. How the hell do you even play this thing? You can get knocked unconscious once and the other two fighter score enough hits on each other to end the round before you can get up!

If I didn't already know you were all crazy, I'd be calling bullshit on your >10,000 scores.

And some hints

Joystick port 1 so either redefine or go to options / swap joystick
4 directions and a single button so perfectly playable by keys
F1 at the first screen if nothing seems to be happening
It uses consistant physics so if something fell the first time you did it it will always fall the same way
you can be killed just as easily by a falling diamond as a falling rock
flashing background = extra life
Timers generally are kind but get tighter the further you go
Press and hold fire then a direction to either dig or push to that side
Every X levels (5?) there is a bonus screen with a single task - do that task for an extra life.
You dont need to grab every diamond , just the number at the top to make the exit appear however normally 'extra' diamonds are with more.
Some enemies drop diamonds when killed
In later screens you need to kill enemies to blow open walls to complete the level
You also get 'special' things in the mine , the ooze will turn into diamonds if 'trapped' in an area / the wall will turn boulders into diamonds if you drop them in from the top.

Zaphod! I wanna play this but the link isn't working for the download (actually your link on page 1 is for Boulderdash 3 but when I search for Boulderdash on Lemon64 there are no working links anyway). :(

Thanks - I've fixed the broken link on the first post and added this - FYI there is an attachment on the first post as well which is just the .D64 and T64 roms for the various games so if your stuck again just grab that.

Ian Fairies wrote:

Ooze took me a few goes this time round - the trick is to block it in with you blocking the last square that it can go to - i did that then ran into the pile of diamonds and got myself trapped :-)
Its also one of those things where after you've grabbed them its very close on time to get to the exit (near the top right corner)

I prefer the Atari 8bit version (simply for speed) however looking at Wikipedia the list of OS versions is

Arcade, Atari 8-bit computers, Apple II, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, ColecoVision, NES, BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, PC, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, iOS

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulderdash)

There was also a Game Boy version - I only know this as I received the NES and Game Boy version of the game just last week.

I'm more used to the Spectrum version, with its horrendous scrolling that couldn't keep up with Rockford so you'd end up stopping to wait for it to catch up. I remember the version I had was released by Monolith and came in an elongated cardboard box (presumably to resemble a monolith - not that I would have known what one was back then). It also came with the brutally difficult Rockford's Riot on the reverse of the tape.

I've played the NES one and its quite good - I assume the GB one is simply a scaled back version of it ?

I'll give it a try tonight - it'll be interesting to see how it compensates for the small screen.

My bloody laptop imploded on Friday and I spent Saturday breaking it further with my ridiculous lack of knowledge before buying a hard drive on Sunday which was spent backing up my files and restoring factory settings! GAH!

I should have walked Boulderdash to first place! That's the two best games on the list I've missed out the chance to get decent scores! Double Gah. And a Grrrr.

I can't say I've ever played Forbidden Forest but I've seen it in *sigh* Retro Gamer. :/

Just had a go on this, and it took me a while to work out what's going on, but it doesn't seem to hold on to my highscore!

Do I have to get to a certain part for the score to count? Or did I answer incorrectly to one of the trainer questions?

It plays much better than I was expecting - much nippier than the C64/Speccy versions too.

Right - i've downloaded and tried about a dozen versions of Forbidden Forest , tape / disk / cart / everything and it either glitches at the start , or plays as normal but does not save your highscores - so I've picked another game from the long list of suggestions and have Hunters Moon (first post updated)

I remember the look of the game and the advert but i have no idea what i'm doing beyond flying around and getting killed - Craig G's take on it

Quote:
Hunter's Moon: An out-and-out shooting classic. Tough, but brilliant networks of creatures going about their business while you carve your way through their webs to find the prizes needed to complete each level. Gutted that Martin Walker won't talk about his old games.

This game will finish at the posted time of Forbidden Forest and simply replaces it as part of the challenge.

Many games, especially from the early years, seem a bit sluggish on the C64, but that's likely because they were from the USA and designed to be run in NTSC, where they would run 20% faster.
