My character must be a true representation of myself because he always panics, punches or kicks the air and then collapses. Sometimes I'd swear the other guy hasn't even touched me so I must just pass out from fright.

Why oh why are we playing this instead of Yie Ar Kung Fu? I don't deny Fist was groundbreaking or is a good game, but for racking points up YAKF is far better.

Or IK+ for that matter. Actually, have you ever played Sai Combat? That's not bad either.

IIRC we did IK+ last year.

Pah,

I don't like this game much. I sometimes forget to press 1 to start the game and it takes me about 15 seconds before I realise I'm not controlling the character, that's how little control I have over the guy!

[wavey effect to go back in time]

It's late 1989 in an office in Brentwood. A bearded man sits at a desk while a hoard of suited people look on. For this is the boardroom of Amstrad PLC.

Anonymous besuited man: But Mr Sugar, it can't be done.

Sugar [slamming fist down on table]: I tell you it can.

Anonymous besuited man: But it will take years and millions of pounds of R&D

[suits all nod and mumble in agreement.]

Sugar: I want the best games console on the market, I want an Amstrad badge on it, I want it in the shops next September and it must sell for under £100.

Anonymous besuited man: And what shall we call this console.

Sugar: Call it the [dramatic pause] Amstrad GX4000.

[mumbled approval and nods all around]

Sugar: And I want the best games, all converted by experts. I saw this game the other week, Pang. Get Ocean to convert it, and make sure it's the best version of any home format.

Anonymous besuited man: But won't that be abit much on a 8 bit platform.

Sugar: I've thought of that. Take the arcade version and make it more "console". Ocean will know what I mean. Now gentleman. To work!

[group disperses]

[wavey effect to present]

This weeks game is Pang on the GX4000.

A fantastic conversion of the original scaled down and "consolised" for the GX4000. This is my favourite version although purists moan about the wrong tunes for some levels and slightly dodgy collision detection. But it's a great game and totally overlooked.

Downloady: http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/downloads/filedetail.php?recid=1888

It's a cartridge so you need to load it in as a cartridge from your file meny.

One small problem is you need to get 100000 to get a high score so we'll just trust you if you get less.

One proviso, you need to ensure you start from the first level because the game will let you start from anywhere up to India. Mount Fuji is the first level so we'll all start from there.

Enjoy. I

Joystick only. So check your emulator for the joystick mapping keys. Arnold on the Mac is shit at this (it maps to keys my Macbook doesn't have) so I'm using Winape on the PC. Go to the input menu and redefine away. Remember to save your mappings for future use.

Hmm.. I dunno.. I'm no slouch, although I do tend to hammer the fire button at times.. maybe some kind of reward system for a minimal number of shots? Or do you hang around to kill the enemies too maybe?

I think it depends on when you die. If you die near the end of clearing a level you've obviously scored points for nearly clearing that level. However, if you die at the beginning of the level, then you will not have got so many points.

Hmm, this game seems to be a bit bugged.
I'm not sure if it's the rom, the emulator (winAPE 2.0 alpha 8) or something I've managed to do, but when I played the other day, I seemed to start a new game with my score carrying over from the previous game. That didn't happen this morning, so I thought it was a one off, but I've just started a new game with a score of over 500000. 8)

No idea. Remember that is *my* cart that is online and I have never ever seen this happen. It must be an emulator bug but I was also playing on Winape as well

It looks like it's scoring during the attract mode and then starting with that score.
Load the cartridge and start the game straight away, the score starts at 0.
Reset and wait for the tutorial to start, as soon as he's shot the first bubble, start the game. You'll start with 50 points.
If you leave it a really long time, you can start the game like this:

You wouldn't find such shoddy workmanship in the Spectrum version. ;)

I doubt I'll play this again as the collision detection isn't as precise as in Mame so it's rather a frustrating experience.

It is slightly dodgy which can be frustrating but it is a decent conversion. The Speccy version is ported from the CPC so you may actually find it has the same bug (if its not the emulator doing it)!

I'm finding it harder in the emulator than it ever was on the console. Possibly display lag on LCD's making it a problem. Splat was the same, the only way to get a decent score was to use the Macbooks built in display and keyboard. The wireless keyboard and external LCD really impacted my scores.

It's just because I've been loading it, having a go, then leaving it open and doing other things before having another go and wondering why I have a giant score.

As for the collision detection, the person responsible should be tied to a chair and shot, except the bullet should miss by a few inches. The relief on their face turning to horror as the blood starts to soak through their shirt because, actually, the bullet pierced their heart.

To be fair, sometimes the balls brush past and you don't die. So it is swings and roundabouts.

Oddly its far more evident on a PC monitor than it ever was on a TV.

I've noticed the bad collision detection, too. It was quite common in them there days.

This of course has nothing to do with the fact that I'm utterly shit at Pang. I haven't even bothered posting a score yet.

Well indeed. And it would have been the first game the developers would have been using the hardware sprites on the CPC Plus/GX4000. Think I can forgive alot for that frankly.

Daft isn't it?

Just for fun (not for scoring) I started at India as I used to back in the day. Wanted to see how I could play it from memory. Walked it right through to the London final level despite Leningrad having a bastard second level if you get it wrong. London level 3 defeated me but IIRC one time I got as far as New York.

Ironically when you get to India you get more invincibility drops which seem to be lacking in the earlier levels. The earlier levels suffer from lots of the boxes that cause all the balls to explode. + one of the levels sometimes has a habit of dropping a catapult at the wrong moment meaning you can't always finish the level.
