Do you think I'll be able to get a sweeping brush from a Pound Shop? I can't see how they'd make money on one at that price. |

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2 ... upgrades/1 Firstly, the battery pack - good for seven hours of use, Apple claims - is glued in place and completely irreplaceable. I'll give you a hint. It starts with C and ends with UNTS. |

I just heard two of the girls talking in the office: "We got the ferry to Zebrugge and the catamaran back" "What's a catamaran?" <proudly>"A catamaran is a boat that goes to Hull". I think I love her, this one. |

Doccy-G mentioned it in his review which is in the Apple conference thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8666&start=30 http://www.tuaw.com/2012/06/13/the-cont ... a-display/ Quote: RAM soldered to the motherboard, as we all suspected. No ability to upgrade it after purchase. I couldn't find anywhere on apple.com that makes this limitation clear to shoppers, either. That strikes me as disingenuous. Quote: Battery glued firmly into the case, making removing it potentially hazardous (lithium ion cells can explode if pierced).
Battery glued over the delicate trackpad cable, which you run the risk of breaking if you do get the battery out without killing yourself. |

Let's be clear, though -- every one of Apple's decisions in the MBPwRD is defendable from an engineering standpoint, if the design spec was "make it as thin and light as possible". Non-removable RAM saves space. The proprietary SSD saves a lot of space. Gluing stuff together saves space and improves rigidity (as you effectively have more contact points), meaning you need less struts, which saves even more space. |

Post subject: | Re: Bits and Bobs 35 |
I can see how gluing the battery in would improve rigidity but I don't think it would save space. I agree with your other points though Doc, I'm sure they didn't just agree to glue all these things in out of spite and to piss of their customers. |

TheVision wrote: I can see how gluing the battery in would improve rigidity but I don't think it would save space. Improving rigidity saves space and weight, because you don't have to reinforce the case itself as much. Also, you don't need the extra space and weight taken up by a bay that allows for a disk to be removable. |

Of course, Apple's upfront charges for RAM and SSD are high, and now you have no way to avoid paying them. From Apple's perspective, that's win/win.

I have had a throughly productive day. Both Windows boxes are drefragged and cleaned up ready for the new SSDs, the ReadyNAS has had a silent fan installed, which was a piece of piss and took 5 minutes. The Drobo has also had a silent fan installed, which wasn't quite so easy and involved a fairly intricate removal procedure and some wire cutting and splicing. When I put it all back together it still worked! Hopefully the new fans will push enough air, but i'll keep an eye on them and turn up the fans from their lowest setting if necessary. It's nice a peaceful in here now. |

Mr Razi, who is studying for an MBA at the University of Wales, said he had left a note on his car explaining: "Dear Sir or Madam, this car is broken. I am just waiting for the AA to arrive. Please do not fine! Thank you, yours sincerely." That was bound to work. |

Not as good as "He said he had gone off to visit some of London's sights, including Buckingham Palace, but when he returned to the car "the windows were smashed in pieces. I was completely shocked"." |
