Finally, a sequel to Counter-Strike Source, which is looking a little tired by today's standards. Wahoo!

Quote:
Just today news from the VALVe office has emerged as our own Craig "Torbull" Levine has taken the trip down to supposedly "help develop" the new version of Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike:Global Offensive (CS:GO). Is this VALVe reaching out to the community, recognizing the competitive community?

News first arrived about the new version on the ESEA.net Facebook Page, saying:

"Counter Strike: Global Operation... More info tomorrow!"

Jess Cliffe, one of the original creators of Counter-Strike, was seen posting on the SteamPowered forums, saying "Global Offensive."

Rumors:
Planned to be released Q1 2012
Focuses on 5v5 competition
Press release within 24 hours from VALVe
Plays on an updated source engine
Individual & Team rankings
New Guns added
New Grenades
Dust & Aztec major revamp
Spamming still viable
Ammo is free

Since CS:S was the testbed to the Source Engine, could the new CS be a preview of what awaits us in HL3?

Edit: That reminds me, I must find time to play through Episodes 1 & 2 of HL2.

Interesting theory! It is running on an "updated version of the Source Engine", so you never know.

Hmm. Reading that reddit thread, it seems like another incremental upgrade with tweaks to the current maps, a few new weapons, etc. Maybe we're getting a "definitive competitive" version of CS:Source with better graphics. Bit like Quake Live. Maybe a Free to Play model? Could be interesting.

Haven't Value stated that the episodic installments post-HL2 should be considered HL3 by any other name?

Certainly, if the development time on Ep3 is anything to go by it should be a massive motherhumping game by now.

It's referring to in-game currency! Have you ever played CS? You get money to buy weapons and equipment after every round, dependent on performance in that round.

This is completely pointless. What's it going to add? Counter-strike is already global and offensive.

I have played CS, and realise that there's an in-game currency, but it seems an odd thing to mention.

What with hats in team fortress and whatever it is they want you to waste your money on in portal, I'm worried they might start charging real money for in game items. If they do, hopefully it'll be purely cosmetic like TF2 and portal.

Na, it's mentioned because there has been a lot of talk in the community about ammo costing in-game moneys and whether or not it's a good idea.

Some trailers and gameplay footage. Quite excited about this now. Apparently it'll also appear on Live and PSN, and Valve are pushing MS to allow Steamworks jazz so they can update it properly and keep it as fresh as the PC version, unlike the unfortunate case of TF2. I'll definitely be getting this for the PC, but I'll be interested to see just how possible it'll be to play well on a joypad. Especially as cross-platform play is also in there...

Any way, the videos!

Counter-Strike is a bit different to other console FPSes. For a start there's no "aim down sights", and it wasn't specifically designed for consoles like Halo was. I'm perfectly happy using a controller for any FPS, but CS might be pushing it. Especially if there's cross-platform play.

CS 1.6 played ok on the original Xbox.

That wasn't even CS 1.6. It was a specific console game. I'll nip this in the bud now, any way. We'll find out when it comes out, innit. I do hope it plays well on the consoles though. I'd love Xbox Live Counter-Strike fun with chums.

edit: In fact, Counter-Strike Xbox came out before 1.6, so shut up! If anything it was based on 1.5.

CS is the original Half-Life mod. CS:S is a remake of that mod in the Source engine. And it's nowhere near as good. The gameplay isn't quite as tight and the characters feel all floaty. The gunplay was all messed up as well. Recoil is really weird and it's considered a little too "spray and pray". But it was pretty. When it came out. I still played it a lot, but nothing near the number of hours I put into the original.

I just used the '1.6' suffix to make sure you knew I was talking about the original CS.

But regardless, Counter-Strike Xbox was a totally new game from the ground up, specifically designed for the Xbox, but based on the original mod, rather than a "port". My worry is that because CS:GO is essentially the same game on all three platforms (it'd have to be to allow cross-platform play), that it won't be optimised properly for joypads and the PC spods will have a significant advantage. Having said that, TF2 played reasonably well on the 360, so yeah, we'll see how it goes!

Im sure that people used to controller play will be at no disadvantage. They'll be used to it so can compensate for the PC players slightly better speed. Looks good anyway. Will it be a 50quid release for júst a MP game or a cheaper download only thingy?

They can get hours of practice in while the PC spods fanny about with drivers and patches.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.

I am so there, it's going to be fucking hilarious. They might have been able to spack up some FPS games to be playable on a pad (auto-aim and hitboxes the size of barn doors lol), I refuse to believe it can be done with Counter Strike.

Sigh. You don't need auto-aim to play on a console. You just need to learn how to use a controller without throwing it out of your pram.

Well the argument will soon be settled I suppose :)

Looks like it's PC/Mac/PS3 - no 360 though.

Yeah I don't know where the auto-aim bullshit comes from. What was the last game to use auto-aim? Single player CoD has the snap-to aim thing, but that's all I can think of.

Aim-assist is probably more accurate.

As I understand it MW2 features an aim-assist in multi-player on the consoles.

Initial Googling suggests that it's relatively subtle (not the 'snap to' auto-aim that WTB was referring to), and in some situations in can mess up a kill, but that overall it's a help.

Please note I'm not stating this as fact, I just remember reading somewhere that a lot of console FPS games feature an 'invisible' aim-assist and large hitboxes. (The large hitboxes I certainly noticed when I played MW2 on the 360.)

I shall Google some more.

Well allow me to meet your expectations.

In the absence of first-party information (there's nothing out there from IW or Treyarch about this that I can find), I'm gonna have to go with lots of anecdotes which as DocG is so fond of saying, do not represent data - but they're about all we have.

As such, yes MW2 (and other games in the CoD series) feature aim-assist on the consoles. (Not decided on the Battlefield games yet, still looking into that, but they're far less run-and-gun so probably wouldn't need it as much.)

My point stands, if they don't give the console players any kind of assists, the PC players are going to pwn them more than this cat just got pwned:

It's a Valve game innit, we'll just have to wait until it's ready.

Not really too interested in the beta TBH, I prefer to spend my time playing games that are finished! (Although in the case of Bethedesa, the general approach appears to be to sell the beta for lots of money and then incrementally fix it over the next 12 months.)

Mind you, I have to wonder if Counter Strike is really going to feel relevant in this day and age, I realise it's always been a 'purer' experience than the Battlefield games, but BF3 has lifted the bar to an insane degree IMO, not sure that 'Counter Strike Again' will cut the mustard.....

Of course it'll be relevant! I wish people would stop talking about BF3 in the same breath as every other FPS, because it's a completely different game to most of them!
