I didn't like Fireteam Elite. It got really repetitive, really fast.

It did, but blazing a way with a pulse rifle never got boring.

Alien Trilogy on the Playstation was great at the time (though has probably dated badly, and one of the two Commodore 64 Aliens games was very good too.

I liked Fireteam Elite for a few days but then it just died a peasant's death thanks to the massive lack of content and the fact that the upgrade system was so messy. I always enjoy having turrets in these sort of games though, so the Engineer class was fun. The number 1 tip for that game is to turn off the horrible Diablo 3 style outlines from the aliens. It kills the atmosphere completely.

Still, I really liked Colonial Marines. I know it was kind of bullshit but I really enjoyed walking around the locations from the film and it was dripping in fan service. But, yeah, what do I know?!

I'm still getting over how terrible Alien: Covenant was anyway.

Don't forget Alien: Resurrection on the PS1, and it's "terrifying" control scheme:

Gamespot wrote:
The game's control setup is its most terrifying element. The left analog stick moves you forward, back, and strafes right and left, while the right analog stick turns you and can be used to look up and down. Too often, you'll turn to face a foe and find that your weapon is aimed at the floor or ceiling while the alien gleefully hacks away at your midsection.

It'll never catch on.

Was it Stuart Campbell who used to insist FPSs were bad and wrong if they didn't include some legacy Goldeneye style control scheme?

TBF at the time, I found the default Goldeneye control scheme worked really well for me, and I never understood the hate the N64 joypad got.

I'm OK with the more modern scheme too, as in reasonably comfortable, I think my struggles are more just that I'm not very good at FPS.

Also those robot guys in Alien Isolation were creepy as heck. I found that game quite quite tense and stressful - a little too much as I stopped enjoying it and got frustrated.

I learned recently that Goldeneye supported dual stick controls by using 2 N64 controllers at the same time.

Apart from the stupidly low FPS on that trailer, that does look pretty good.

Oooo, that looks nice...

I got to play Alien Legendary Encounters for the first time with some friends over the weekend, despite having had the games for years. What a cracking game, barely survived the Alien scenario and then the whole team got slashed up by the Queen in the Aliens scenario (base game also includes Alien 3 & Resurrection)....if you can find a reasonably priced copy (as it doesn't seem to be in print anymore) it's well worth picking up.

You beat the Alien scenario on your first ever try?

In the nicest possible way: are you sure you're playing it right?

Yes we were...we did go one character down but managed to draw consecutive god hands to win...while the Aliens playthrough ended with the team getting whittled down mover the course of the game.

I'm staying away from the trailers now but I'm definitely excited as it seems like they've gone a bit low budget on this one, which is definitely the way forward. Go for something more gritty and raw rather than the poncefests of Prometheus and Covenant.

I finally bailed on Aliens: Dark Descent. It's so good but it just gets so difficult later on. I was in a room fighting off aliens and no matter what I did or where I went, a massive onslaught would get triggered and all my best marines would get eaten. It's such a chore when it's like that. Shame though as it was so great for a while.

it's still worth it for what I got from it. And if you do a bit better than me (and don't leave the game for like six months) you'll probably fare better with it. It's got an X-Com permadeath thing, so losing marines does mess with your chances.

I completed it, then I put a mod on it to make the guns "realistic" (it should not take eight pulse rifle bursts to kill one alien) for the second playthrough and that was a much better game.

I think it was this one, but I'm not 100% sure: https://www.nexusmods.com/aliensdarkdescent/mods/18

Booked my ticket for Alien: Romulus -- was tempted to also book a ticket at the BFI IMAX but it's a long old way to go just for a film.

I'm going to continue swerving the cinema but I'm definitely going to be twitchy about this one. I'm super spoiler averse anyway but I'll deffo have to be careful with Romulus. I don't want to know owt except if it's good or not.

I worry that it'll be 'Prey' good. ie - not good but people think it is because of the series' recent output.

It was okay. Certainly better than The Predator but so mild and safe when compared to Predator 2 AKA Best Predator. Shit CGI too.

The thing with Prey is that for all the praise it got how many times have people rewatched it?

I know it is recent but I can't imagine people bothering.

Well, that was certainly an Alien film. Spoilers, obviously:

The Good Stuff:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
  • Loved the additional world-building around Weyland-Yutani and their operations, in this case on the mining colony. Also, see bad stuff though.
  • The set design was universally brilliant, so nice to see the aesthetic from the original movie so prevalent; the griminess, the monitors and technology, the Semiotic Standard.
  • Decent performances from all of the humanoid characters, although with the exception of Andy, I can't say they really had an awful lot to do. The actor playing Andy was amazing.
  • Pretty good storyline, with only one (admittedly giant) plot hole that I could really identify (see bad stuff)
  • I liked the new 'lifecycle' stage between the chestburster and the adult Xeno
  • Quality visual effects, especially the Impact Event that destroys the space station
  • Interesting to see a new-but-old character in the form of Rook (again, see bad stuff)
  • Nice to see how they connected it to the storyline of the original movie

The Bad Stuff:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
  • As far as WY's operations go, I thought the 'the company have changed the quota and you can't leave for another 6 years' made them almost comically evil, and shouldn't be necessary
  • Plot hole: It seems desperately unlikely that WY would have left the space station in that state after everything went to shit. They sent Colonial Marines to LV426 in Aliens, why wouldn't they send Colonial Marines to the Renaissance station?
  • The CGI on Rook-but-actually-Ash was beyond terrible, and was again completely unnecessary. It looked worse than the de-aging CGI used in TRON: Legacy, and that takes some doing.
  • I really wasn't sure about the Resurrection-style Newborn at the end, and despite adding the new lifecycle stage to explain how the tiny chestburster suddenly becomes the giant adult, they did away with it entirely for the newborn which seemed weird
  • In general, wasn't keen on the callbacks and references to the original movies. Especially the 'Get away from her... you bitch' scene -- it makes no sense for this phrase to be said, by this specific character, at this specific point of the movie
  • The pulse rifle in this movie seems more advanced than the M-41A that the USCM use later in the timeline. And again, unnecessary.

So, not quite perfect, but not bad by any stretch. I was also worried that
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the movie would concentrate too much on being excessively gory and violent like most horror movies are these days, but it was surprisingly in-keeping with the gore levels from previous movies.

I have to agree with Gaz on a few of the bad points
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the Get away from her line and the bad CGI Ian Holm. In a film surprisingly light on fan service, they seemed like the most fanservicey moments

I would put it as a comfortable third best film in the franchise. A long way from the two originals of course.

I’ve seen it. 6/10

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Looked bute
Sounded great in IMAX
I did not like the gestation period of the alien being so stupidly quick. It went from facehugger to full grown arsehole alien in, what, less than 5 minutes. In fact, the whole thing was so stupid at the pace it was moving. The timer of 40 minutes until the ship crashes was unnecessary IMO. Why not make it 3 days or whatever and just have them trapped. Fade to black a few times as the characters catch their breath; figure out a way to deal with a threat; or just allow the alien to fucking grow. It felt like it wanted to incorporate elements of the previous films in one compilation when it should have just picked a lane. If you want to be like Alien then just stop the characters for a minute. If you want a 40 minute timer then be like Aliens and let the baddies already be present. And low-fan service my arse. The whole thing was just bits of other films. Even the turret section from the deleted scene was present with the acid stuff. And how come she had 400 rounds in an assault rifle? And it wasn’t even as good as the source material. Look at when they enter the hive…”let’s not go here” “Hey, I heard a noise!” and just fucking runs off. And the hive was actually one corridor which they run up and then back down. Really forgettable. And the dumb set pieces took its toll in the end. When the dude took a phone call while sneaking by the facehuggers? I rolled my eyes so fucking hard. When the alien caught her as she fell down the lift shaft? When the alien dipped in a hole after that and poked his head back out? When Andy said “…get away from her you bitch”?

Talking of Andy, the actor did a good job, but come on, I fucking hate it in films when dumb means talking like you’ve got a brain injury and being intelligent means talking like you’re suddenly unaware how to talk to people. They could have just leaned more into whether the Android was evil or good without the silly fucking talking, but, oh wait they did that in what film? Most of them. And what an ending? Ejecting the baddie from space? AGAIN. Frankly, I didn’t get much of what dude was trying to do with the black goop, but I’m sure they said reverse engineer the black goop or something so where did they get a picture of the pots the goop came in? Was the shape of the pot in the DNA? And the big CG close up of the dudes face when he grabbed her by the face? I was yawning so hard. Just fuck off into space like you know where you’re going. And why did that woman inject the black goop? She had no more than a fucking paper cut by the end. She was that sodding critical as they said and even managed to limp her way back to the ship before she just decided to inject some unknown black shit in her neck.

Seriously, they should have ditched the basketball player at the end, saved the money on CG, slowed the film down more and leaned into the horror elements. AND I’m annoyed at so many CG facehuggers. Just have a couple. Those fuckers are scary enough. When it stuck its willy in that chaps mouth I was physically retching. It was fucking groovy. More of that, I was hoping. Then it just got shitter.

Mind you, I was wondering how that chap was physically able to swing his bat like a boss when he’d just took some nitrogen to his fingers. They seemed to instantly forget about that.

Anyway, I had fun at the cinema and thought it was a good time but on the way home dissected the film and decided it was a bit shit.

Huh? That wouldn't make a lot of sense cause we don’t see any giant aliens, mutated ones or any giant dead ones. Why would they even extract the black goo from an Alien just to put it back in another alien. I’m not buying that explanation.

Re: Goo
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
They're using the goo to make aliens, that's what all the vccacuum-sealed facehuggers are. Goo-based facehuggers make the whole gestation period super-fast.

As I said, I wasn't a fan of that.

I've decided that my head canon now is simply this:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Kane takes a while to pop (and for the facehugger to do its job) because the egg it came from has been lying dormant for a long time, so it’s “past its best”

Ripley takes ages to pop because it’s a Queen gestating.

The Romulus lifecycle speed is because the facehugger is freshly defrosted after being cryofrozen, so is still at its prime, kinda like how a Birdseye garden pea tastes good because they're frozen straight out of the field.

But that was satsuma :)

As expected this was to Alien what Prey was to Predator. A little safe, a little bit too fan-servicey and full of young people with no real personalities doing stupid things to advance the plot.

It looked good and I thought Andy was great. The lead actress did okay in a baby Ripley kind of way but she was far from memorable. Mary Winstead would have been a much better choice. As would some character actors who know what they are doing in the other roles.

A dull opening 20 mins really took the wind out of things for me but after that it picked up a bit. Thing is, the facehuggers so badly upstaged the actual aliens. So that kind of messed things up.

It's not so much a case of what issues it had (although the [whatever the fuck that was at the end] thing definitely hurt it even more than when Alien Resurrection did the newborn thing) but what did it actually do to elevate it above, say, Alien 3 and Resurrection? Because honestly I can't anywhere where it excelled.

It wasn't bad but in a world where people think Prey is better than Predator 2 (for reasons I'll never understand), mediocre nonsense like this might just get a free pass in the same way because at least it's not Covenant.

6/10 but I need to rewatch it and it could genuinely drop points when I do.

Agreed on the lack of personalities, but I don't really feel like that second bit is warranted -- I thought it was a pretty refreshing change for the characters in a modern Alien movie to not do stupid stuff to advance the plot.

What did you think was stupid?

I'd have to watch it again but there were a few times in the film where I said 'OH FFS.'

Lead character (Rey? Rain?) going back down the lift shaft for the by then super sketchy android was definitely one of them. But given how she managed to magically get back up to the top of the lift shaft in ten seconds, it didn't have too much of a consequence.

Did you think it was stupid when Ripley went back into the hive to get Newt? If anything, Rain going back for Andy made more sense, in a way -- Ripley had literally only known Newt for, what, 24 hours maximum. Rain had known Andy for possibly most of her life, and definitely for at least as long as she'd been working on the colony.
