Not a huge problem

:this:

Basically, if it doesn't happen on your PC browser (here), it's probably the phone's fault.

It does on my phone, didn't on the iPhone.

Is that too small?
I can easily make it bigger.

But then you can just zoom in

No you can't. The page width is fixed to the device width with 'user-scalable' set to 'no'; no zooming of any kind.

The text is too small in that screenshot, but that was never the issue for me. It was the inconsistency of the text sizes; some tiny, some huge, some normal. I had a play around in the CSS and couldn't for the life of me trace the fault. Though I am, admittedly, shit.

Post subject:  Re: Forum Runner App

If you zoom in, you need to keep panning the screen back-and-forth to read each line. Very tedious.

Not on the mobile version of the browser you can't. Also, that image is close to twice the size of an iPhone screen.

No it isn't. You can merrily test that by resizing it in a PC browser.
[edit] Wait, well, yes it is. But it's meant to be. Does the iPhone not recalculate 100% when you zoom in?

Yep. It only affects mobile browsers, I think.

Code:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width,user-scalable=no" />

All of this is your fault, of course.

Post subject:  Re: Forum Runner App

It take it back - Android doesn't resize the page when you zoom in - it does, however, line break the text so you still get it all in the visible area. ([edit] This might be the result of changing that metatag, though)

Is a better mobile theme something that people would actually use, or would I be wasting my time fixing it?

Nope. The browser line breaks at the end. You have to scroll to get buttons though.

I can live with that.

I'm not going to urge you to fix it. I find native apps—as belmingly broken as they may be—a lot nicer to use.

There's no real reason why they should be - they're only doing it that way (as opposed to building a theme) so they can charge you.

They already have my money, so I might as well poke them to do the hard work.

I do wish this forum software would have a proper API instead of having to write custom plugins, though, so somebody could do a decent job of it.

There is that, but the whole forum is open-source, so they haven't got that much of an excuse.
Also, like I said, they could easily do most of what they do using themes and shit.

Sure, but it's a lot harder to monetise that -- and it's a non-trivial amount of work, so why shouldn't they monetise it?

Ah, yes, the execution of the idea is lacking in all the apps I've seen so far -- but that doesn't make the idea itself bad.

There's probably some legs in the "shit on the Internet should be free" conversation if some mod wants to get their split on.

It's still fine on Safari. But if you use a buggy app you have your positives and negatives.

Are you talking about the standard or mobile site? The former is fine, the latter not.

Post subject:  Forum Runner App

The IUI site is rubbish; it doesn't jump-to-unread because of a bug in the Labyrinth JavaScript library. The other, older mobile site has various small glitches and is what I'm taking screenshots of. In particular, text often is too small, and zooming it does no re-wrap lines on Mobile Safari (but it does on Android). This last thing might be fixable.

The normal site works alright on the iPhone, but it doesn't render well on small screens; tap targets and text are often too small without a lot of zooming and panning. It's not unusable but it is sub-optimal. I fail to see how that can be any different on Android phones with similar screen size to the iPhone.

Amusingly, with the default browser on my comparatively shitey Nokia E63 the three different sites work fine. Picture threads end up a bit shit though as it sticks scroll bars in & you can only see 1/4 of the picture at any one time :(

First post on the last page is "you're up to date with this thread already".
