Aye. Just seem to lack the mechanical memory to press them when I need to switch. Too well drilled with Alt-tab, it seems.

Since having the baby we're struggling a little on just one wage and are having to use up some savings and cut back on what we spend... I don't even buy lunch out anymore.

Is that because there was no maternity pay for you?

Or has one of you stayed off work full time after the year?

We have a window open as it's stuffy in our 1970s office block. There are people playing panpipes outside. Must. Contain. Rage.

Bubba's 8 months old now and Lady T has gone back to work (one day a week, going up soon to 3 days)

We don't get anything - no paid maternity, no rebates or tax breaks, nothing at all. We're applying for permanent residency, but until that comes through we're a little tight.

Bought a new light jacket as the zip on my old one had broken.

The rain has now stopped and the sun has come out, so it's too warm to wear it.

Just left the house, pissing it down. Went back in for jacket, now no longer raining and I have to carry this stupid jacket around all day. Stupid weather.

Recently my rucksack smelt of bananas. After rummaging around inside, my hand got covered in sticky goo. Turned out that a couple of library books I was taking back had put in a different compartment of the bag had squished my lunch. Ick.

We have a mouse in our house. This means I must clean everything in the kitchen. Then I'll keep cleaning them over and over before each use until I see enough traps full of squashed mice to be happy that the invasion has passed.

Try rats! We had one and it almost destroyed the house. Like Tom and Jerry on steroids.

We have field mice that occasionally pop into the utility room overnight in winter, and we peacefully coexist. Well, I say "we"- Mrs K wants them dead.

I've used various sat navs over the years and all of them have the same problem. If you start your journey in a place that isn't on the map, they all give up saying something like "no route available", so I have to drive a bit, then either stop to set it or (more likely) set it while i'm on the move and try not to kill anyone in the process.
Why can't they just pick the closest road and route from there?

I've never had a satnav not do that.

For the first hundred metres or so Nokia Drive desperately clings to the belief that you're on THAT ROAD OVER THERE and definitely not careering uncontrolled into the post-apocalyptic wastelands and CERTAIN DEATH. Then it quietly considers the possibility that you are, in fact, where GPS says, and pops along.

The Nav Pro in the BMW does the electronic equivalent of sticking its fingers in its ears, though. "ZIS IZ NICHT POSSIBLE! VE DEMAND REALITY COMPLY ZIS *INSTANT*!"

Actually I've no idea what it does in that case, but it gets really fucking uppity when you deviate from its carefully plotted, optimal route.

The leather on my new pair of Doc Martens feels light, thin and plasticky, and doesn't take any breaking in. Thought they might be fakes at first, but all other signs of authenticity are there, so they're just shit. :(

Post subject:  Re: 1st world problems

Doc Martens used to all be produced in the UK, now a lot of that has been outsourced to China and I think Thailand. It's a bit like Fender guitars - you can buy several levels of essentially the same guitar but made in different countries with different standards of workmanship and materials.

The UK ones used to have that rock hard leather that you had to break in hard but then fit your feet forever. I think the ones from overseas break in easier but also don't last as long, so pros and cons.

Yeah, these ones are from Thailand, and feel much less sturdy than my last pair, which were made in China. (I've been wearing Docs forever, and have never had a pair this cheap-feeling, TBH!)

There's actually a DM shop in Scouseland. Probably should have tried there before mooching around on eBay...
