I got my Desire HD on Monday and don't have any of the problems mentioned in that article. The casing is flush and easy to use. Not used the camera too much, but what I have taken I am very pleased with. It's far faster than my G1 esp at loading up web pages. I love the whole set up and feel of it. I can't help thinking they must have had a faulty case on theirs. It is heavier than other phones, even the Galaxy S, but not uncomfortably so.

If there's any thing in particular you'd like me to test/check out, then just give me a heads up.

Pupil, it's a bit difficult to say at the moment, it is lasting 'all day' but only just. It's getting constant use though being the new toy in the house, if I put it Down for longer than 30seconds someone else has picked it up.

Think I will have to get Sam his own Android phone sooner rather than later!

I only had the phone in my grubby mits for about half an hour while restoring GJ's backup from her G1 and installing a few things, but seeing as that was at least twice as long as this guy I think I'm qualified to comment.

Right, where shall we start...
Size-wise, it's not much bigger than my galaxy S (maybe a couple of mm in either direction), but HTC have managed to fill more of the phone with screen. It seems a bit thicker though, mainly due to the camera lens protuding from the case and it's quite a bit heavier as well.

The two covers both seem to fit nicely on the phone, and the battery cover is staggeringly easy to remove and replace, so engadget might want to consider getting a refund on their trained lab monkeys.

I can't really put into words what I think about the volume rocker, like the review says, it feels more like one long button than a rocker, so it's hard to which bit you're pressing. GJ doesn't seem to have any issues with it though.

The whole paragraph devoted to how the case sticks out and frames the screen bemuses me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, my Galaxy S does this and I'd never noticed in nearly 3 months usage. Secondly, the case on the Galaxy S protudes much further than the one on the Desire HD and it is nowhere near "about a millimeter", it's barely 0.5mm and that's on the Galaxy S and even so, I can't see how it would even bother anyone unless they were in the habit of making wild exagerrated swipes across the screen. With their fingernails.

I can't really comment about the actual phone usage, but while the screen is noticably bigger than my Galaxy S, I don't think it's as sharp (particularly the market screen seems a bit washed out on the Desire HD). The low battery capacity vs big screen would certainly concern me as well, but GJ seems to have it on charge pretty much constantly when she's not using it, so it's hard to judge what the battery life is like.

It's certainly worth hunting out a few more reviews on the phone before making a decision either way.

Out of the box, it's pretty terrible. TouchWiz lasted about 5 seconds on my phone and the filesystem that it uses is horribly slow. Fortunately, xda is full of enterprising types and they've managed to turn it into quite a nice phone inspite of Samsungs best efforts. To be honest, I've not used SenseUI or TouchWiz enough to offer any sort of comparison.

Cool, I'm starting to think of an android phone now in much the same way as I do when buying/building a PC: it being best to concentrate on the quality of the hardware as you can reinstall the OS/software to your own liking. SenseUI does sound good, but I don't want anything on there which will slow the phone down and, no doubt, I'll barely use any of the features of it anyway. Also, it seems Google are moving towards eradicating the default install of these SenseUI/TouchWiz things anyway with 3.0 and beyond. Also also, from what you guys were saying and other things I've read, I'm best installing a vanilla version of Android on a phone and then installing LauncherPRO anyway.

From what I've heard, from a development point of view, the Nexus One (which I think is pretty much the same as a Desire) is the phone to have. With that in mind, it's worth keeping an eye on the Nexus Two rumours that are floating around at the moment.

That's interesting, I hadn't considered that but it makes very good sense. Reading Gizmodo today, they claim the Nexus 2 will be the Galaxy S but tweaked a bit, which sounds perfect! I've always rated Samsung's phone hardware but HATED their phones OSs - this could be the perfect compromise!

That's 30% of Android's awesome - as you can imagine, it deals with Google's stuff (like Mail and Calendar) very well.

Don't care a jot, sir. Don't use the Google tools apart from GMail, and I'm fine using the web interface for that. Don't really want syncing up and historyies and all that jazz... unless it really is that good? :s I basically don't want the phone to share my SIM contacts with GMail and vice versa, or my browser history, or anything like that.

I just unlocked my G1 using unlocking.com (I'm on ASDA Mobile, that should give you an idea of how much I use it). It cost a tenner and took about a minute, as they promised. How about that!

My local shady mobile shop wanted £20 for it, and to keep the handset for three days. They can fuck off!

Having my phone contacts be the same as my Gmail contacts have been acebest for me, with, of course, the added advantage of them being backed up and instantly available on new phones.

As for the Gmail contacts, I have loads of contacts in Gmail (complete with mobile numbers) but only 5 show up on my phone. It's strange.

When I imported all my contacts from my SIM card, it removed them. Now I have no contacts. (No change there then, doh-hoh-hoh.)

You have to sign in with a Google account to access the Market, and they don't tell you that you can't ever remove this account, and all the contacts you add will automatically be associated with this account. Fuck it. I'm selling it.

That input method looks interesting, so I applaud their efforts. It'll take time to get used to, but given we're entirely used to QWERTY-based keyboards, any change (even to Dvorak, for example) takes a lot of time to overthrow our current methods.
