Does anyone else use HTC Sync? I've just installed it because I figured it'd be easier to edit my contacts using a keyboard than the touchscreen.

Anyway... it's on my PC but it doesn't recognise my Desire when I plug it in. The phone just says it's searching for HTC Sync then eventually gives up. How rubbish is that?

Anyone else experienced this? I would like to edit my contacts but it looks like I'm going to have to do it on the phone.. this could take a while!

I don't know. I know that flashing Cyanogen onto my G1 made the phone think it was a HTC dream, so none of the T-Mobile software would work, but I think this could be fixed by editing the phone model in the build.prop.
On the Galaxy S, Kies (the Samsung PC software) refuses to detect the phone if it's not running TouchWiz (the default phone launcher)

Well the official 2.2 update is available for my Desire, so I'm downloading that now. Not sure what's supposed to be different/better about it though.

It says it'll nuke my network settings as part of the process, which is a bit annoying and I'd have thought completely avoidable.

Well that was fairly painless, I had to put my 3G and MMS settings back in, but other than that it was very straightforward.

I can now set it up to be a wi-fi hotspot and suchlike via its 3G, apparently.

I was referring more to uninstallable crapware and branding.

It's O2 branded but apart from the startup screen there doesn't really appear to be any shite on there, same as before I updated it.

In that case enjoy. At least you don't have T-Mobile's epic amounts of German crapware on it

Oooh quite a few new goodies in 2.2, the phone shuts down massively quicker, I can see the '3G wi-fi hotspot' actually coming in quite useful, and unless I'm imagining things, it generally seems a bit snappier too.

I can also now have a PIN instead of an unlock pattern, but I've come to quite like the unlock pattern (mine is wicked and uses all 9 points), so I'll keep it.

I get my upgrade from Vodafone at the beginning of January, I really hope they get the Desire HD as that's the one I've got my eye on right now.

Skype in the market now. Weighs in at a huge 10 megs, won't install to SD card and it appears half this bloat is graphical frills of pointlessness. Big splash screens which say 'make free skype to skype calls'

I did have one before it too, but I broke the screen, right after you had text me which was why I didn't reply, I couldn't get your number off it... I haven't put any of my contacts in this phone as it's not mine.

Depends on the phone you have, but yeah, I'd say so. The fact you can't install it to the SD card is the bad part.

Quite. There is a wider issue though - this is a new app, 2.2 has been around since the dinosaurs were in charge and it still doesn't install to SD. A free app that predates Froyo I can accept, and will uninstall if necessary. But apps I've paid for and apps released yesterday should be appropriate for the current OS.

I'm rooted but it's less hassle to do without Skype than to fuck about with app2sd. And given that I love the platform and 99.9% of Android users aren't rooted, I reckon I'm better off banging the drum about this. Looking in the reviews on marketplace everyone agrees with me apart from the "yay skype at last! 5/5" posts, which might as well say "cheese whirlwind haberdashery" for all the use they are.

I can't argue with any of this, people shouldn't have to root their phones just to be able to use them properly, and new apps should support apps2sd unless there's a good reason for them not to.The question is, is there a good reason?
When I installed cyanogen5 (based on eclair) on my g1, apps2sd was one of the best things about it, I'd always been running out of space and now I could fill my phone with crappy apps that I'd only ever use once. Then cyanogen 6 came out, with no support for apps2sd because it was already in froyo, problem was, in comparison to what had come before, it was terrible. I fully understand that google had to do it like this, because if they started asking people to create ext partitions on their sd cards people would just stop buying the phones, but this meant that you couldn't run apps while connected to your pc, shortcuts to apps would take ages to appear, and widgets were pretty hopeless as well. Now that might just have been because it was a g1, rather than a desire or whatever, but I can see why in some cases it might just be easier for the developer to not support it.

Anyway, this does beg the question, how much space does the desire have for apps, I'm guessing not enough if you need to install stuff to the sd card.

Just to make this a reasonably informative post, it appears the market is now displaying all the costs in pounds (with an approximate figure if that's not the actual currency).
I'm sure there was something else I was going to post, but it took me ages to swype out that first paragraph and I've forgotten what it was.

Some bloody good points there regarding widget speed etc, though I've noticed no performance deficit in widgets on my Desire from moving them to SD. I think though that once your app gets above a certain size, you will be losing users if you don't let them stick it where there's room. I'm a skype user on my netbook and pc, it's an obvious boon to have it on my handset, but it's too bloody big, so it's not on there. I want the software to succeed, and it will do better with the option there.

GY: Froyo's market share is quite low. It's 28% now (http://www.intomobile.com/2010/09/10/an ... ket-share/) but was in single digits back in the summer, when Skype where presumably starting work on the app. They might simply have not been able to include SD support, or to justify the time taken to QA a fundamental feature like that late in the dev cycle.

That's not really Skype's fault, either. That's the reality of using a rapidly iterating platform.

Edit: Although there is also an autorooter thing now. An app that you run on your phone, that roots it. I linked to it a few pages ago...

Forgive my ignorance in these matters, but I'm still not sure what rooting really lets me do that I can't do anyway, especially since I've now updated to the official 2.2 firmware for my Desire. I've read most of this thread and I'm still a bit unclear on it.

Oaky, Miss B just got an Orange HTC Desire. I am buggered if i am reading this entire thread, but what "must have2 apps should she get. Keep in mind, I very much dount she will want to "root" the phone - even though it appears Orange have done their usual trick and raped the crap out of the functionality.
