Somehow, and I'm not quite sure how, MrsA and I have been signed up to stage manage (or in my case, assistantant stage manage) a production at the theatre. Everyone was really nice there, the vice chairman is to put me into touch with the partner of the law firm that is involved, so that's a double plus good. The theatre is also on the finals of a TV program. No pressure there then.

No, but i) cheap bar ii) everyone seems to be in the sort of profession that I wouldn't mind working for iii) cheap bar iv) massive social scene v) cheap bar.

I have to work out what stage management is now.

Off to the amateur operatic society tonight, too.

Wikipedia wrote:
The responsibilities and duties of stage management vary depending on the setting of a production (i.e., rehearsal or performance) and the type of production (e.g., theatre, dance, music). Most broadly, it is the stage manager's responsibility to ensure that the director's artistic choices are realized in actual performance.

As the lighting, sound, and set change cues are developed, the stage manager records the timing of each as it relates to the script and other aspects of the performance. The stage manager maintains a prompt book, sometimes called "the book" or "the bible," which contains all cues, technical notes, blocking and other information pertinent to the show.

During rehearsals, the stage manager typically serves as an adjunct to the director by recording the blocking and ensuring that cast members stay on script, have the requisite props, and follow the blocking. Stage managers are responsible for helping establish a show's rehearsal schedule and ensuring that rehearsals run on time. The stage manager typically documents each rehearsal in a rehearsal report.

Once the house opens for a performance, the stage manager controls all aspects of the performance by calling the cues for all transitions (this is known as "calling the show") and acting as communications hub for the cast and crew. Large productions may utilize a stage management team in which the manager is responsible for calling the show while other team members operate backstage to ensure actors and crew are ready to perform their duties. After a show opens, the stage manager is also responsible for calling brush-up, put in and understudy rehearsals to make sure that the show's quality is maintained.[3]

The stage manager ensures that lighting and sound cues are acted upon at the right time by issuing verbal standby and prompt calls. Each cue call begins with the word "standby" to indicate that an action is imminent and, in response, the technician who will perform the action acknowledges readiness to perform the action. At the appropriate time, the stage manager will prompt immediate execution of the action by saying "go".

Oh, my. That's an awful lot of responsibility.

I totally should have done the mouse dance, instead.

I'm a mighty space pirate, I'll be fine.

Erm. I hope.

Belatedly, I've just realsied the trouble with the internet. Having spoken yesterday with someone who has professional qualifications in a field, and worked in that area for god knows how long, and accepting her advice and purchasing a product from her, I still felt the need to google it, and read the customer reviews. I think we really do need to shut down flows of information, mostly customer reviews.

Heh.

Me neither to be honest. They were once mighty, but nothing's really grabbed me in a decade. At least I'll no longer have to read magazine interviews that have them say, "We made a misstep with the last album, but this new one is back to rocking form!" and I shall also no longer have to read reviews that say, "REM's previous album may well have been lacking, but this new one is a partial return to form! FOUR STARS!" every bloody time. I shall now listen to World Leader Pretend in tribute, however.

In other news, I just sent this email:

Clearly, because I AM MAN, and between my MANLY THIGHS hang MIGHTY GLOBES OF MONUMENTAL PROPORTIONS, I have TORN SECTIONS OF THE FRIDGE APART so that the door will shut again.

IT'S NOT A GREAT... Er... It's not a great job, but it'll do. We really need a new fridge (that's twice the size of normal fridges*).

So, yeah. The fridge door will shut if you're gentle with it.

* LIKE MY BALLS! And I don't mean twice the size of a normal man's balls, I MEAN TWICE THE SIZE OF A NORMAL FRIDGE!
