Is that something you'd also say? ![]() Saying women and men have different roles to play is pretty misogynistic tbh. misogyny = hating women. I don't see the point of blurring the concepts. Like homophobia means a fear of gay people? Language evolves. I accept that it's more sexist, but a blurring of concepts is sometimes ok. But in Dracula, for example, women are revered and treated as something to cherish and protect. You can think of it is grossly misguided if you want, but it is at the same time diametrically opposite to hate. I just don't see how the word misogyny can be applied to that. |

I'd say the 'usual' meaning of misogyny is the 'ingrained prejudice' one. Which isn't necessarily obviously expressed as hate, but as a belief that the whole sex has its place, can be objectified, etc. Does that fit Dracula better? |

It's been a pretty busy week on the forum this week hasn't it? I wonder if anyone has a graph of how many posts there has been compared to other weeks? That would be interesting. |

You could say it's equally prejudiced against women and men, then. It's just Victorian gender roles taken to their literary extreme, basically. Against which the vampire provides the sexual undertow, which is the genius of the book. Edit: Maybe "equally" is the wrong word since men and women weren't equals when it came to social rights and so on, but you get what I'm saying. It's gender roles. |

Just a thought Interesting question. I think it's going to continue for a long time. WW1 was so much of a shock to the country and shaped its direction so dramatically it's almost become what in other nations would be a founding myth. |
