It was refurb but is the XXX edition (642mhz opposed to 602).

It should have the remainder of the warranty with Scan on it too. (at least 8 months).

The HDD has a couple of months (IIRC) warranty with WD. It had a 5 year on being a retail drive.

so, I bought a load of bits over the weekend and built a PC.

It's got an i7 920 cpu (if that means anything to you)

I've overclocked it using settings I found on the interweb, which I'm sure will be fine (!)

Anyways, its now running at 4GHz, up from 2.6GHz, and after running the 3D mark vantage benchmark, the CPU got upto 75C after the last CPU intesive test. Is that a safe temperature, seeing as it probably as intense a test as the cpu will ever get?

That's pretty hot yes. Are you using a standard Intel cooler? I would replace it ASAP they're shockingly bad.

That's what I use I think. Asetek rebranded..

You are aware that it's no better than a top end air cooling solution just quieter? You might get like, 1 or 2 more c's less but that would be it.

I know very little about I7s and I5s because I chose to go AMD this round. I do know however that 4ghz is pretty much the fastest you can get a 920 to go so those temps don't really suprise me :)

75 c max is perfectly fine, your room will just need the heating turned off :D

One Noctua 92uf worth about £40. It's a 92mm fan version of the 120mm fan one. Doesn't have the Noctua fan though.
One Foxconn Fox one worth about £7. It's a PCI centrifugal slot cooler.

I'll chuck, I mean safely pack those in the box with the rest.

Aion, the latest Korean grind-fest, has built in macro support (as opposed to you having to haxx0r this in) so as to enable you to largely automate your grind. At the push of a button, your winged avatar will kill the diseased boars, loot the corpse... simples! And so the MMO steps even closer to the entirely uninteractive watching-a-bar-fill action of Progress Quest.

Star Wars Galaxies had that years ago.

It used to lead to 'hilarious' accidents where by your /follow would accidentally lock onto a fellow player instead of some beastie, and you'd follow them constantly for an hour trying to /skin them while you were off doing something more interesting.

I don't like it at all tbh.

I was being pessimistic because I had read opinions of it before release but the gist to me goes like this.

Go to someone. Go off and play space invaders style shoot em up with waves of enemies. Poor aiming system, can shoot people in the head numerous times and they fail to die.

Repeat ad nauseum. It has no soul really, just predictable and boring.

Once you level up and have good perks it's usually a forgone. However, these aren't humans we're talking about in FO3, they're mutants and stuff. One decent pop to a Raiders head and it's usually lights out.

If it is an RPG then it needs to be an RPG with some kind of combat system put into place. Like VATS, or something like the turn based systems used in Paper Mario and FF.

You're forgetting it's built largely around mulitplayer Co-op, thus VATS would be impossible. If you haven't played it multiplayer you're missing the main point.

A lot of PC gamers seem to get upset about widescreen displays having a horizontally expanded FOV, compared to 4:3 screens. This gives a "zoomed in" feeling, apparently, although I studied the screenshots of Bioshock and couldn't fathom what they were complaining about.

for me this game shows how rogue-likes should be done. Instead of having a gameplay consisting on mindless clicking on enemies, we have some fun fps where player skill matters. And it's fun to hunt for new weapons since they all feel different and look different, so it's just not a matter of looking for a weapons that plays exactly like the one you have but has +1 to damage.

Too bad about the FOV though

I guess 90% of everything I've played on the PC has been 3rd person isometric, and most of my FPS experience has been on consoles, so I never really notice.

Because RPGs do not have the aiming systems that FPS do. If you're going to do an RPG with an FPS aiming system it needs to be good. Sadly Borderlands aiming system is cack. My opinion of course, but compared to something like MW2 or HL2 or any other decent FPS it's poo.

How many people complained about the aiming system in Fallout 3? because I remember a good few, one in particular saying he wanted to redo the game without VATS but gave up shortly afterwards.

Knowing you you probably set the res to your desired res *and* set the settings for the res too? for example, most of the games I have installed recently not only have resolotion settings (IE- 1680x1050 which is what I use) but also 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10.

I don't even think I know what this means. Every realtime RPG pretty much has the same aiming system. If you're pointing at the target, you have a chance to hit. You then apply modifiers to that based on character skills and weapon characteristics.

It's like any FPS, but taking skills into account. Hence the RPG bit.

Well the aiming system was so poor that all I seemed to be doing was running backwards shooting things until I was pretty much at the point I had left from. Then when they were all dead I had to walk all the way back to where I had been. Boring and ultimately incredibly predictable.

No I don't *just* press the VATS button. But without it the game would have been pretty bad. I use it mainly up close to save on ammo because without using it you tend to use about ten times the ammo falling enemies.

So that's not the aiming system being poor, it's the game simulating the fact that you're a skill-less noob. Which you are at the start of the game.

It reads like you want RPGs to be FPSs - they're never going to be that. If it's a style of game you don't like, then fine - but that's not a 'poor aiming system', it's a different type of game.
