I've preordered from play.com too, for £128ish (after quidco is paid). To me, that's acceptable -- certainly not cheap, but it is acceptable. I was happy to pay £60 for GH3+guitar and this is only twice that, with game, guitar, drums, and mic. As a poster on HUKD worked out, when you take into account VAT, calculate from street prices and not RRPs, and allow for the extra EU songs on the disk, that represents a 21% premium over the US pricing. Again, this isn't cheap, but it's a better deal than you get on, say, PS3s. It's also a lot cheaper than you can import it for, particularly as I'd have to import it on PS3 and then wouldn't get to reuse my 360 GH3 controller.

So overall I'm happy to pay £130 for it. £180 is taking the piss though. Hurrah for play.com and their aggressive discounting! Now lets hope they honour these prices, eh?

play.com take quidco, too. I've just pre-ordered mine.
I may cancel it again, depending on how much money I've got toward the end of the month.
Oh, but they don't charge you until it comes out, do they?

Also, maybe I'll just go to Craster's house and play it with him.

Indeed, I wouldn't expect to be charged for this until 20th or so of May, whenever they get around to shipping it. Sadly my payday is the 22nd so I'd better make sure to have some money left at the end of next month!

Yeah, I expect so. Not sure how I'll persuade the wife that the house needs plastic instruments, but I'll get there.

I have no self control and so I ordered from Play.com.

I feel like I am at an A.A. meeting with all of you lot here, shamedly spending too much money on plastic drum sets.

Yeah, I'm genuinely a bit embarassed paying this much money for a game. It feels like I'm participating in Western civilisation's collapse into depravity and decadence. Next stop: monkey knife-fights.

Quote:
Harmonix's Rob Kay has responded to criticisms over the European price point for Rock Band, telling Eurogamer: "We're not trying to rip anybody off."

As announced earlier today, Rock Band will launch in Europe on May 23rd for Xbox 360, with PS2, PS3 and Wii versions to follow in the summer. The total cost for the game, drum kit, microphone and guitar will come to GBP 180 / EUR 240 - compared to USD 169 (GBP 85 / EUR 107) in the States.

Speaking to Eurogamer today Kay, who is lead designer on the game, conceded, "The combined price, if you add all that up and decide you want that full experience, is quite high. It's not something that is normal in videogames.

"But Rock Band isn't normal in videogames," he continued. "This is an entirely new thing. What other game comes with three peripherals that are all different? It just makes sense for the experience we're trying to deliver."

When asked why the game will be so much more expensive in the UK than it is in the US, Kay cited VAT and the higher price of consumer electronics generally. "These are definitely not excuses so much as contributing reasons," he stated.

"I can't talk to the explicit pricing - how it gets split down between retailers and distributors and the whole chain - because I don't actually know that much about it."

Kay went on to say he can see why consumers might be "a bit put off" by the price of Rock Band, but observed there is an option to buy just one instrument or a microphone separately. He added, "I firmly believe that if people do [buy it] they'll have an amazing experience they couldn't get anywhere else."

The drum kit alone is £70, so even if you just had that and the game, thats still 110 moolah. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it too much to care about the buying of food and shelter rather than
PLASTIC DRUMS!

Cor, it's nice being somewhere where you aren't called names for pre-ordering fun things... :munkeh:

She Bangs The (Plastic) Drum, eh?

I'll be getting it on the 360, Runcle. I look forward to the band breaking up in May, and in June reforming without me.

Thats a fucking joke of a price and half the songs are on GH3 anyway.

I *might* buy the game for the other guitar tracks and promise of downloads-a-plenty (including full album releases) but over £100 for some plastic insturments can fuck right off.

Is it plausible to import the instruments from the USA and buy the PAL version in the UK.

Annoyed tbh.

I would personally set the maximum of £100 on the WHOLE shebang, including drums, mic, game, guitar.

The freaking 360 guitar isnt even wireless = SHIT.

That's not a bad idea actually assuming they are compatable (can't see why they wouldn't be). I've been wondering what I can bring back with me, I wonder how big the box will be.

Strongly considering going halvsies with someone, aye. Maybe we need to set up a communal BETEO Rock Band kit.

£180? They can fucking get to fuck, the fuckers.

Oh and those plastic instruments are apparently a pile of shit.

Normally, I'd laugh at the people who'd say 'why don't you just get a real guitar?' but that option is cheaper.

How sturdy is the kit for this? I'm notorious for hitting drums like they've just said Discordance Axis were shit.

He is an influence; I do like a good, heavy drummer. I would very much like to drum some Melvins-y stuff sometime, if anyone would like to join me. But not right now, as the sound of tapping keys is exacerbating this crushing headache already.

Apparently, they are quite good. They don't care if you hit them hard or not, and 'proper' drummers hit them a lot harder than non-drummers do. They can be quite noisy, though.

I can't drum (or don't, rather), but I think my guitar ability is enough that I could 'do' Melvins. This leads excellently into my long-standing desire to cover 'Honey Bucket' as part of a group.

Noise isn't a problem; if I get this(unlikely) I'd attach triggers and use Drumkit From Hell anyway. It would sound nice.

We should continue such chat elsewhere, in an, er, rock band thread. So as to not confuse those hoping to hear news of Rock Band.

I've got next week booked off, and am already negotiating with the kids as to who gets what instrument.

It's looking disturbingly like I'm going to get saddled with the bass.

I might just get the game rather than the full set as I don't really have the room and from my experiences with Drummania on the PS2, I'd have no chance - drumming with both hands while tapping the foot pedal all at different speeds was beyond my limited co-ordination.

Yes, but only on 360. You'd be missing a chunk of the point, though. I do not know for sure if you can use a USB SingStar mic from the PS2 with the 360 version of Rock Band, but I have head yes.

you can use your 360 guitars and any usb mic

the main thing you would miss is the drums.

im considering just doing this too btw, as I mostly like guitar, mostly.

I would like to pick up the drum at a later date though.

Further to other advice, I have read in many places that you can also use the 360 headset as your microphone. Note, however, that the drums seem to be £70 everywhere and the drum+guitar+mic pack is £100 in most places, so there isn't much money to be saved if you want the drums. And if you don't want the drums you are foolish as a foolish fool on Fool's Day.

I'm looking forward to trying out the Strat. The strum bar doesn't click on it, which I think I will prefer (I find the very heavy click of the Les Paul offputting).

#the strat *looks awesome* but is apparently flaky and cheaply build ...plus its wired :(
Early ones were, later models are fixed. They suffered from the strum bar connection drifting loose. Recall the early Les Pauls had disconnecting headstocks too. The wire is a pain but then the drums and mic are wired so it's not the end of the world. GH4 drums are wireless, says GameInformer magazine, but I am not waiting for GH4 now and neither am I buying two sets of incompatible plastic drums. Rock Band it is for me.
