That's good. A low voter turnout would be a real kick in the crotch for DD.

The new series of The Hotel Inspector is on, and they've replaced Ruth Watson with a different woman, and this one appears to have cleavage and everything. Muchly improved.

I'm watching a TV program that has just explained that if you dug a tunnel in a straight line from one part of the Earth to another, say from the UK to Australia, or maybe China to Paris (they don't have to be opposites, just far enough apart so the curvature of the Earth causes the start to be 'down' and the end to be 'up') and you only use gravity to get there, not only will your 'car' hardly use any fuel (as it will accellerate on the way 'down' and decellerate on the way 'up'), but it will always take 42 minutes. No matter how far you go, if you travel by gravity alone: 42 minutes.

Well, I thought it was interesting.

I'm watching a programme about Battered Men, which has told a story which resulted in this guy getting stabbed in the heart and killed by his apparently psycho fucking girlfriend after years of domestic abuse. Scary.

Now, as a general rule I'd never, ever hit a woman, but you'd better fucking believe if one of them hits me I'd hit back. I believe the term goes 'Man enough to hit, man enough to be hit'.

So did I. I couldn't be bothered to integrate it so I googled instead and found this; amusingly, I now remember solving this problem during my undergrad degree.

It is called 'Universe', on the History Channel. It's currently on Sky anytime, but today is the last day, I believe.

It's not that good, but that bit was interesting.
So is this bit near the end, which suggests that we can solve long-term zero-g issues (bone loss, blood clots, etc) on long-distance space flights by laying down on a centrifuge.

I played 'Call of Duty 4' for the first time tonight. Who thought it would be a good idea to put the 'aim' button next to the 'throw grenade into wall so it ricochets into you' function? I die often and ignobly.

I have a pretty sizeable (self-inflicted) headache right now.

Ugh.

And I'm running a training session in 40 minutes.

Double ugh.

So what you're saying is the NHS should be encouraging people to use their camera phones more on nights out?

I just had my Oyster card in my hand, about to put it back into my purse, but instead laid it neatly on top of my freshly buttered crumpet.

I am going mad.

Last night I finally got round to making a proper attempt at the Ring time trial in Forza (for those that don't know, a 12.7 mile, 147 turn narrow course in an old, unstable, hugely fast Group C LeMans car.)

6 mins 58.

With precisely 0 penalties, that's unheard of.

Immensely chuffed.

Oh, and no assists at all. No traction control, no stability control, no anti lock brakes, manual gears.

Not sure if we have a general PC question thingy thread, so going to put this here:

When I download things on my PC, they are, 90% of the time, corrupted in some way. This applies to pictures, zip files, games, anything. Does anyone of you bods know WTF is happening?

Further info (dull):
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
PC =
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1Gb RAM (512 x 2)
Windows XP SP2 / Linux UBUNTU.

Doesn't occur on the laptop, so not the router. Memory checks out fine using 2 different mem checkers. It wasn't there when I built the PC, it started at some point after that.

Also, the limited amount I have used UBUNTU to d/l I have not had the error*. I was wondering if it was something to do with the swap files windows uses, but that is my only guess, and I have no idea how to solve it if it is.

* may be a complete Richard Herring, as I say, not d/l too much.

Any suggestions?

Not yet, I've been far too busy (though I do have a sonic screwdriver waiting), and I need to buy a stanely knife.

I always do this. 3 times now I've managed to attract a massive audience to skeptobot, and then I have to piss of for ages, and let them all dribble away again. Hey ho.

Also, probably wouldn't have spotted this, as I don't read bits and bobs, but I clicked the wrong link.

Thanks, I am not that fussed though, I have been living with it for ages now, it is just annoying at times, as I can't just d/l something (like that game Vegetables pointed in your direction), I have to move PCs then move it back. I may well just re-install windows.

Sounds like it's maybe your hard drive, bobbyaro. Do you have a USB drive you could use for saving stuff to?

As CUS has said, it could be the hard drive.
Is it only affecting downloaded files, can you copy some stuff from your laptop (or just copy some files that are already on your hard drive) and see if they are ok?

Are you only using one browser, can you install/use another one (firefox/safari/ie/whatever) and see if the problem still occurs then?

Turn off any firewalls running on the PC. ZoneAlarm in particular is a bastard for doing that, as is the Nvidia firewall. It'd explain why Ubuntu doesn't do it.

Sorry, meant to mention that: it affects both Firefox and IE. I have tried d/l to another HDD (same windows installation though, so it would go via the C: drive, even if sent to G: due to Temp files, correct?)

It doesn't affect anything else, only when d/l, installation and direct copying are fine.

Is there anything I can use to check the HDD? I have used scandisk and that came up okay.

£8.5K in the end.

For that money I would've gone for an Integra DC5.

edit: Scratch that, they've gone up in price AGAIN. Is it the T-Sport version with variable valve timing and all that gubbins? A guy at work used to have one, went round corners pretty quickly. He said it was a great car.

Yeah, it's the T-Sport. I wouldn't have paid 8.5K for a vanilla one.

Only had it three months before the engine started sucking up oil like a prostitute does with penises :p

It was either spend £1200 repairing it and risk it happening again, or get shot of it and upgrade. So far, I'm not regretting my choice.

So it's 8 days since my steering lock went pop and I had to pay 100 quid for the AA to take me home. I was hoping to return from holiday to a working car but VW still don't have a new steering lock. They ordered it last Monday and it was due to take 3-5 days but still no sign of it.

Luckily at 8.30 on Monday morning I can collect a hire car from them which is currently booked out for the week. They still don't have the part and they don't know when it will arrive. Despite being a part featured in all models of Golf (and presumably Polo, Passat, etc) for years and years it is so uncommon for the steering lock to go that getting hold of one is a pig even via a dealer.

I really bloody hope I don't have to drive to Eastbourne on Thursday in a motorised rollerskate (a Lupo) like last time they gave me a loan car. It's bad enough I'll be late for my job on Monday because I have to collect a car. Ho hum.

I want my Golf back! She may be old and partly broken but at least she's happy on the motorway and drives well. And the boot is big enough for my kit. In a Lupo stuff will have to go on the back seat which means I can't stop anywhere for a meal where the car might be out of sight. Still at least it's transport.
