@ Grim.... That article in this month's issue on taking the Citreon concept car around Harrods was a brilliant example.

It's about two steps up from Max Power.

Hmm, I'd say TG Mag was a perfectly serious mag until 6-12 months ago, certainly better than some others out there like What Car. Personally, I'm an Evo and Car Magazine kind of guy (not to mention Retro Ford and Bike).

OK - I was more referencing The Times there, to be honest.

Oh for sure, that was the prime example that I gave - a motoring column that gives marks out of ten and specific recommedations for various cars, for potential purchasers. One would hope, therefore, that such a person would be well informed and an expert in such matters, not an 'internet persona' or 'brand' hamming it up for his media audience.

A publication that lets Giles Coren have an opinion column in the news section?

Tam Shields writes an opinion column in the Glesga Herald, but he must mean everything that he writes because it's a serious publication

Yes.

"Serious publication" != one that lets an uniformed, shortarsed restaurant critic comment on current events.

Does this humourous column serve an explicit, stated purpose of rating and recommending cars to would-be purchasers? ;)

Occasionally, although they're not usually recommendations :DD

OK, here's a definition of 'turbo lag' (emphasis added):

Turbo lag refers to a short delay before the turbocharger develops sufficient boost (pressure above atmospheric pressure). As the accelerator pedal is pressed down for rapid acceleration, the engine may lack power for a few seconds. This is caused by the impeller and turbine not spinning fast enough...

In other words it is a BRIEF, TRANSIENT THING as I previously mentioned; it is a function of impeller inertia. You're talking about something completely different - boost threshold - which is nothing whatsoever to do with turbo lag.

Turbo lag has nothing to do with the continuous lack of pulling power at low RPM, in a Mitsi Evo, end of. To describe it as such is to totally and utterly misunderstand what 'turbo lag' even is. End of story.

Oh right, you were talking about the difference between boost threshold and lag (like I said at the end of the last page), fair enough.
That makes Clarkson even more right in my head, as 99% of the population (as I said) think that's exactly what turbo lag is. Including the inventors of the anti-lag system.

We'll be arguing about the difference between 4x4 and 4WD next :)

From the Rock Band 3 pre-order page:

Want to receive this the day it comes out? Select FREE First Class at checkout.
Halo Reach says the same. I'd suggest the delivery estimate in the order page is inaccurate, is all.

FREE first class? Is that because you're a Prime guy? Mine just says First Class. Anyway, I don't think the delivery page is inaccurate. I think that's inaccurate. The delivery page only changed today or yesterday because I checked it on Monday as well. On Monday everything was set for release-day delivery. Today they were set for the following Monday. The Reach one hasn't changed because I'm using expedited.

Also, you could try looking at the game I actually cancelled:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dead-Rising-2-X ... 153&sr=1-3 - DR2 - no mention of "get it on release day" anymore - I do distinctly remember it saying that when I ordered it, though - page is different to the Rock Band one.

Now that you've cancelled them all, we can't find out if it's accurate or not. Order one again. SCIENCE!

If your interested I can let you know when my Amazon pre-order of DR2 shows up , i just checked my account and its showing 'expected' for the Monday , and it also tells me that i pre-ordered it on the first of August ........ 2009

I once got an email saying that an album I'd pre-ordered had been dispatched from the US. I had no recollection of doing this until I checked my records and discovered that a few months previously I'd ordered it very late at night after a heavy session of ['reminiscing with chums over a couple of glasses of orange juice' -Temperance ed.]. Still, at least it was one I wanted.

But on the other hand, it was workable to the layman who doesn't have the smallest clue how a turbo works. On an evening entertainment show.

They do a perfectly adequate job of getting stuff like "this 400bhp car is bloody useless in many surprising circumstances" across to Joe Bloggs. If you can't accept and enjoy that you're not in the target audience and should try to ignore it, much like I do with the £120 of my license fee I get no pleasure from.

I understand that you are technically correct (which, as we know, is the best kind of correct), and I myself understand the difference between lag and boost threshold.
But if JC had said "boost threshold" about eight people in his audience would have known what he was on about, so he used the commonly-wrong phrase "turbo lag" as more people would get that.

And happy Birthday to gazchap.

It was being reported in The Meeja a few weeks (months, even) ago - I don't think it was much talked about here, to be fair.

Was there a non-shit series of Transformers comics? I have a very vivid memory of a really excellent collection (possibly an annual), that most notably had a story in it about the white Porsche one (with red and blue stripes - possibly Martini branding?) having a proper falling out with Optimus and hiding under some rubbish. It was actually quite good, and "grown up", rather than being a kiddies comic. There was some sort of schism within the Autobots, or something.

I haven't read that story you mention, featuring Jazz and everything, but if it was an annual, it'll be part of the Marvel UK comic series. Which was a mix of Marvel US reprints and original stories and stuff, and had a lot more exposure amongst British kids than the cartoon series did, come to think of it.

The modern-day Transformers comics is published by IDW, which started off pretty well until the series was rebooted in 2008 with the All Hail Megatron (aka Epic Fail Hackwriter) story arc, and it's not been worth reading since, apart from Last Stand of the Wreckers mini-series (now trade paperback, etc), which was very in the style of the Marvel UK Transformers comic, and written by British people.
