It's not like if you cut off my arm you would call my arm "Mitch." But then reattach it and call it "Mitch-all-together!"

Yes, apparently you can:

Any material with a reasonably high melting point such as metals and alloys can be strengthened in this fashion. Alloys not amenable to heat treatment, including low-carbon steel, are often work-hardened.

Yes, apparently you can:

Yup! Note how you can snap even quite thick steel wire (like fence wire) easily, by bending it back and forth several times so that it heats up - keep on bending it and it will snap - stop bending it and it will "set" and be very difficult to bend again once it's cooled.

Things I like about that blog:

(a) Cats with laser beams for eyes;

(b) she's quite pretty in an odd sort of way; and

(c) she's using the Farscape font for the menu bar!

And followed a link through from her one on Atheist Extremism to this, which was very good indeed.

The UN report into the Gaza flotilla piracy escapades of Israel has found, unsurprisingly, that Israel was breaking international law. What with them breaking international law.

Israel swiftly dismissed the accusations as "politicised and extremist".

Now there's a surprise.

If Israel ever, ever accepted any criticism at all they may find they get a better hearing from everyone.

Yeah, quite. And the continual casting of aspersions on anyone criticisng Israel as being anti-semitic grew old quite a while ago.

I don't think anyone would dispute that they have a right to protect themselves from the terrorists of Hamas, but surely, as the sole nominally Western democracy in the region, it would behoove them to act a little bit more civilised.

Suffolk council to outsource EVERYTHING.

Jesus wept.

Given how much trouble we have getting our bins collected by Veolia or whoever, I can't imagine how bad things would be if our county council outsourced everything else as well. The end users end up being the victims of "work to rule" contractors and contractual disputes between the provider and the council.

This is a very bad idea indeed.

And if they think they're actualy going to save money by doing this then they really have no idea at all. Every outsourcing ever, whether to the private or public sector as a customer, ends up with the provider taking the piss.

Of course, it'll be awesome for our business of course, as we advise on a lot of outsourcings. But still. BAD IDEA.
