Here's the scoreboard for week two:



N = The person to nominate a theme for week five. As I've said above, the person who'd controversially picked Madonna's howlingly awful cover of 'American Pie' was Kern. Except it wasn't really, it was me deliberately picking a bad song as a joke, having invoked the Song Wars' Secret Rule - if you don't pick a song in time, you may well be cruelly tarred with a bad song as your choice. Bwa-ha-ha.

With all that in mind, here are the first 'proper' set of league tables:

Remember folks, as Peter Snow used to say, that's just a bit of fun, it doesn't mean anything. Well, at least not until I'm closer to the better end of it, anyway.

So, week four. The following themes have been chosen - can everyone still to make their choice think up a track and get it to me by 11:59pm Tues 21st October?

Group A - Chosen by Nirejhenge - "something to fire you up, get you moving, exciting, fast inspiring"
Group B - Chosen by Scarysheep3000 - "songs that have parentheses in their titles"
Group C - Chosen by Spinglo Sponglo! - "songs, about, involving, or sung by Children's Characters (ie from books, tv, film etc)"
Group D - Chosen by Sheepeh - "Songs which have been on a 1980's movie soundtrack"

And for the people picking themes, the following people need to come up with something by the same 23:59 21/10/2008 -

Group A - To be chosen by Mark X - "Songs with numbers in the title"
Group B - To be chosen by Mr Chris - "Songs that are appropriate for our economy taking a nose dive"

I voted Stereo Total and expressed my love for it in the thread, obv. I knew it was Mark X who uploaded that, knowing of his previous mentionings of love for the band. Rightly so as well. I looked Le Diable on Youtube and discovered that it was 'The Devil is English'.

Also I expect that secret rule has been used a lot this week. Even though I actually like the 'bad songs' quite often.

Now corrected, you eagle-eyed scamp. Unfortunately for you, this competition uses a stick rather than carrot approach to mistakes, and so I have just poked myself in the eye with a biro. Ouch.

I'd say the people who'd voted for Stereo Total should feel very pleased with themselves, as they've now shown they're actually cleverer, sexier and generally better people that everyone who didn't.

I think it should double our score actually.

There should have been more love for Engel. Turning German Industrial Death Metal into a piece of choral magnificence. Philistines, the bloody lot of you.

I kind of liked it. Reminded me of the backing vocals that were already there. I think it got a vote from me. I figured you'd uploaded it with you having a Rammstein avatar some time ago. I think. The Bangles one seemed to suggest Mimi as well. I think my choice this week is pretty obvious.

Really? I went for something that I didn't think would be so obviously mine (I thought MacArthur park perhaps was a bit obvious). I'm not a fan of the Bangles, see, or 80s music. I had only heard that song a few days prior to the competition. I do love Simon and Garfunkel, though, which is why I went with the Bangles cover, because I thought it was silly, but in a fun way.

Holy buckets of crap - I am second overall for votes. Wow. This is a state of affairs that categorically will not survive weeks 3 and 4.

I don't expect to be getting anywhere any time soon because my taste is a little more obscure, generally speaking.

On the reissue of Floodland there's an absolutely epic cover of Emma which I nearly went for last round.

That was originally on the B-Side of Dominion I think. Or was it this Corrosion? I have a demo version of it which I think sounds much better.

FUN ELDRITCH FACT! For the EMMA recording he insisted on being on stage with his shades on and all that to perform it properly. [citation needed]

It's far better than the Hot Chocolate one which sounds far too jolly for such a horribly sad song.

It's definitely true that the well known or novelty songs have the edge in this competition. Of course I have sour grapes, but I still feel a little outraged that "the Ultimate showdown of Ultimate Destiny" won Group D last week (no offence meant to Sheepeh, more to those who voted for it). And fucking Aqua would have scored points if someone had legitimately picked them.

But if you're "in it to win it", which of course I'm not[/lie mode], it's still a fun game to try to think of the song that's most likely to go down well with the beex crowd. I see it more like DJing than begging the world to accept my music taste.

I'm always going to choose songs that I think are interesting and probably a little less well known. I'm hoping to potentially give people some interesting new music to hear. Sometimes.

I'm operating a strict "Songs That Are Awesome Rather Than Songs I Expect To Win" policy. As will be clearly demonstrated by my Week 5 pick.

I'm doing that aswell. The whole point was to do that wasn't it? I know I won't win because people probably won't like the stuff I put up-but I think it's great so that's why I chose it

I don't necessarily think that people are deliberately choosing songs that they think will win easy votes. I think they just have such crap taste in music they can't think of anything else..

Those of us at the bottom of the table are clearly the best

I don't see what the problem is. My songs have been fudge awesome and I'm at the top. The system works I say.

I haven't liked any of your choices thus I conclude the system is wrong.
