I think in any future song wars I would like to see a ban on using youtube. People should either convert the youtube video to an mp3 and upload it or upload one from their own collection. To avoid any bias the video might have.

I think the problem with that would be apathy.

We've already seen people forgetting to PM Mark their selection, never mind going through even more hoops to get a song...

I'm not entirely sure what you mean but still here's how easy it is to get mp3s from youtube:

Download this program: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/guides/dvd/ ... to-MP3.htm

And then past the youtube url into it. Click go.

Then use the beteo player to upload to the forum.

Simple as. As the common people say.

I think, in order to keep things simple, YouTube videos should still be allowed. Quite a lot of people have only found the time to get their choices in once I've prodded them with the Special Song Wars Stick (or a reminder PM), often very late in the day. Adding another format-conversion-hoop to jump through is only likely to increase apathy.

One extra (optional) thing that I'd meant to add to the knockout round message was along these lines: The next stage - four threads containing just two songs each - is going to look a little sparse. To pad things out, and to make things a bit more interesting, people can decide to add a bit of text, qualifying their choice. It doesn't need to be a 1500-word epic, just a couple of lines about how a song "may be more familiar as the theme to a popular BBC Four show about television, and is performed by a number of underrated and hirsute Californians, and also is great", so to tickle the interest muscles of potential voters.

Only problem is that I was mostly preoccupied yesterday with picking eight trillion little shards of glass from the inside of my car, frantically trying to find my sodding insurance details, contacting a windscreen repair company who can't do anything until Tuesday, and shoddily fashioning a temporary driver-side rear window out of bin bags, after a passing scoundrel decided to partake in an impromptu bout of fisticuffs with my car, so I forgot to include that bit. I'll mention it for the semi-finals, though, and maybe it could also be an option for Song Wars II Turbo.

Naturally, for the final I really should insist that all songs are submitted in the form of personally filmed YouTube clips of the forumgoer performing an interpretive dance to their track. I'm not convinced that'll prove very popular, however.

Only because you have no chance of being in the final, ZERO POINTS BOY~!

I also agree with what (I think it was) Mr Russ said earlier. The more mainstream popular (arf) songs tend to get most points, but even when they don't fit the theme very well. On the rare occasions that I have voted, I've always tried to reward going for something interesting and trying to nail the theme, rather than just a popular song that can vaguely be tied in there.

That said, I would/have seen this as a good way to find new music and to introduce others to new music. Others may be entering/listening for different (and equally valid) reasons.

ALSO, how come none of you schmucks entered the epic "I Want an Alien for Christmas" by Fountains of Wayne?

YOU ALL FAIL!

;)

I think it would be better if the track names/artists weren't listed in the poll. I bet there's loads of people who can't be bothered to play the tracks, so just vote based on which artists/tracks they know they like.

I can always use HumorousWordSustitution™, so if the song is Smokey Robinson's "I Second That Emotion", it could be tagged "Ivor Smuggled Twelve Espadrilles" or something. Sure to become more than a little wearying as time goes on (or straight away), but it would help identify each track with the voting lists, and provide a subtle clue as to what the song title actually is. No need to mention the artists, until the results are revealed the following week.

Still waiting for quite a few potential-knockout people to get song choices in, by the way. If we're short, I'll have to postpone the vote until the correct amount of people have chosen.

QUARTER FINAL VOTING IS NOW UP.

There's also a brief note about the voting period and a short Christmas break in each voting thread. Essentially, you've got until the 23rd of December to get your vote in.

EXCITING SONG WARS FIRST PRIZE FUND UPDATE: After buying the Season Three boxset of American Dad in the sales, I have since discovered that I'd already bloody well gone and bought it months ago. Bad news for me, but what with me being too bone idle to bung my extra copy on eBay, good news for the eventual Song Wars Champion*.

(* Unless they also already have a copy of it, or don't like American Dad. But then, that's their fault, as the remainder of the Song Wars Goody Bag is likely to be taken up with such delights as The Manual From Pang! Collection for PSone, A Very BETEO Christmas on CD, and a copy of the BrokenTV Awards 2009 on DVD, and any other rubbish I've got lying around. Oh, they'll see.)
