What happens next is that the High court gets on its knees and sucks my fat hairy cock the way the BPI has been since I was a child.

It'll be worked around, other sites will list TPB's trackers alongside others in any case. Not being able to directly access TPB does nothing. Not that we can't use proxies.

I see TPB neither obtaining money from musicians, or using 'deceit, falsehoods, or trickery' in their operation of the site. If Geoff Taylor can't even pick his words correctly then it says a lot about the highly subjective nature of TPB's legal status.

There is a workaround already. The Newzbin client has provided access for ages after Piratebay was blocked in Belgium.

I thought it was the record companies who were the ones who defrauded musicians.Y'know, with the bullshit contracts, disappearing revenue and all that jazz. Live and learn.

So, the Piratebay is going to be blocked and we'll never be able to access it ever again.

What does everyone think of this? It's hardly going to stop piracy in it's tracks is it?

It won't make a difference to me - I don't pirate things.

A) It won't make any difference, there are loads of other torrent sites out there anyway,
B) The current version of Piratebay will be blocked, which I expect will give them a downtime of about 5 minutes, if that, while they setup somewhere else.

So all the ISPs have to do to be seen to block it is remove it from their DNS servers?

Yup. It's interesting that the steps they've taken are ones that are incredibly simple to work around.

Dunno. I've been on Google DNS for the best part of 18 months now.

Your router will be proxying the DNS out to whatever DNS server it has configured.

:D I didn't realise that, that's even more ineffectual than I expected!

I expect the ISPs are just going along the lines of
"you want us to block it? Yeah, we'll get right on that... see all done :) "<chortle>

Well I was more referring to when it was announced and loads of people here changed their DNS settings to use it, thereby implying that maybe Grim... had and maybe should remember or check. But, whatever. I'll make sure I implicitly spell out every single thing now in tedious detail instead.

Yes. Grim..., here's a link on OpenDNS for every major router makes to change yours if you want to/haven't already. Google DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

All that'll happen is that I'll buy a tape deck with two tape recorders in and I'll just start recording other peoples tapes that I borrow. Then I'll record the radio too and give them to people. I liked it back then, it was as easy as pressing two buttons.

My brother had a twin tape deck thingy that had a special "high-speed" setting that allowed you to play and record at double speeds. It made the singers sounds all squeaky and funny.

Mr brother had one of those but it didn't work for copying Atari games.

You had to do those at normal speed.

Note that using Google DNS can do funny things[1] to the geolocation sensing that CDNs like Akamai use. In turn, that can make streaming media go slow, because you get served content from some far-flung corner of the globe instead of a server in the UK. iTunes video streaming is a common thing to be affected, but it's not the only thing.

[1] that I don't fully understand.

High speed dubbing. :nerd:

Not to be confused with Lee Scratch Perry on amphetamines.

When Newzbin2 was "blocked" I was on O2 for ADSL, the site was never blocked for me

On my IPAD using a 3G O2 card the site was blocked a week or so after the court made the ruling.

Now I use BT Infinity and Newzbin2 can still be accessed via my browser.

Not sure there is too much checking going on TBH.

Apparently yesterday saw the Pirate Bay record the biggest ever UK hitrate, with over 12 million extra unique visitors.
