Huzzah!

Also, wtf is the point of Tom Clancy's Hawx? Sure'll it'll be Ace Combat 6 but without the charmingly rubbish story.

That does look pretty goshdarned good. However, as someone who was utterly addicted to Knights Of The Sky on the Amiga for about three months, why can't someone spend as much time putting together a definitive WWI flight sim? It might make for a slightly less exciting visual experience, but cabbage crates over the briny? Planes largely constructed out of balsa wood, elastic, spit and the will of Britain's God? Despite what I'm saying here, there's no reason such a game can't be as much fun as Knights Of The Sky, what with the fun of trying to rise above The Red Baron on the campaign mode 'league table' and everything, and losing months of valuable 'game time' because you crashed on the wrong side of the trenches and had to secretly make your way back under cover of darkness.

It's quite possible such a recent game already exists of course, I don't really keep up with flight simulators.

What we need, on 360 that is, is an MMO-flight sim in the style of Dawn of Aces 3... just imagine it. The entire Western Front... you pick an aerodrome, pick a plane, pick a mission (or have one generated for you) and head out into the virtual skies against other pilots.

Sounds like Warbirds, which was always empty in more than one sense.

A decent WWI game would be pretty fun, playing a WWI sim on the other hand, one which attempted to really get the feel of those early air battles, would be an exercise in frustration. The planes were woefully underpowered, just apparently horrible to fly for all sorts of other reasons, and had properly crap guns. Also, no Spitfires, Mustangs, ME109s, FW190s, Stukas etc. :(

Not really a big fan of flight sims but that looks nice. Will it have boss fights in it like Afterburner?

If you'd actually read the link, you'd have seen that it's made by the same company.

Warbirds wasn't empty, at least when I was playing it (1996)... there was always a pitched battle going on somewhere.

I suppose... if they increased the arcade factor a bit so planes climbed a bit faster and such, it could be a larf. And have a huge persistent Western Front and everything. It would take some clever netcode, though, to ensure when everyone inevitably headed to the nearest big battle that it didn't start warping everywhere.

Mentioned this to Perkies the other night and went looking to see what the latest news on it is. And it looks good:

Really looking forward to this now after having had so much fun with the planes in BF1943.

What is shaping up to be the best flight sim on the 360 (not much competition, though the arcadey Ace Combat 6 was damned good) has a demo tomorrow.

The recent Eurogamer preview looked promising too - lots of planes and places to fly them, variable realism so even myoptika can play it, and...

...online multiplayer! Including, it seems, a capture the airfield mode which seems to involve blasting the crap out of an airfield and then landing on it.

Anyone else excited?

There was one for Ace Combat. I'm not too fussed though, unless they did a force feedback one I'd just use the pad.

Pah, I've been waiting for a 360 flight sim for ages. I don't like the arcadey ones.

Already the multiplayer sounds better than Ace Combat 6's... there were only two co-op missions, everything else was little more than a deathmatch.

Something not included (which is a bit of a shame but understandable) is the lack of multiple-crewman aircraft. While it would be very cool to be piloting a B-17 and have your friend as the bombardier, he'd spend the majority of the mission watching the clouds drift by enroute to the target.

I don't think this has co-op in the sense of you and some mates vs AI though. At least that's what I understood from reading posts from the developers on their forums.

Nice, hope there's Battle of Britain fun. I love Il2:1946 to bits, so I have high hopes for this one.

Is this £40's worth? I haven't enjoyed a flight sim in nearly two decades. But then again I haven't played a flight sim in that long either.

Can't wait to get home and try it... according to the recent Hands On on Eurogamer, there's plenty of obscure planes as well as the usual BF109s, Spitfires, Mustangs. Here's hoping for a Beaufighter, Typhoon and BF110. And some medium and heavy bombers!
