I thought I'd better make a thread so as not to get told off for using the bargains one.

Anyway, myp/Dudley. I got through all the circuit races absolutely fine but I'm fucked if I can get anywhere near fast enough on the rally. It seems to start me off with about ten gigantic trucks behind me that are way faster and they just knock me off the road. Any top tips for getting through this? Do you just need to keep retrying it until you have learned the whole track?

No, Baja isn't about learning the tracks really (not for the rallies in any case). Which rally is it you're on about? Have you upgraded your vehicle? I haven't played the game for a while as I want to finish Forza 2.

The first rally in the Baja Bugs. I'm ending up about 40 seconds down and in 8th place after the first stage. But I'm not sure if that's eight overall or eight in my class.

Yeah, the rallies are stupid. I haven't managed to do very well in those either. Just move on up to the next class where it gets a lot more fun.

It's in your class but you're right, I can't do better than 6th with any reliability with a fully upgraded car.

I think I've managed 4th or 5th. For some reason they're a lot easier once you move up through the tiers.

This game really is brutally difficult. I just haven't clicked with the handling yet, but I'm hoping I'll get there eventually.

There's so much fine control you have to do with the steering, throttle, brakes, handbrake, clutch and gears. Maybe I'd be better off starting in Automatic, perhaps. Or just going on a free ride and blasting about there for a while.

I came 1st in a couple of races the other day, but now I can't seem to place better than last at all. Gah.

If you can get past the Baja Bugs tier, it all gets a lot easier. For some reason they're hellishly hard. Even with a fully upgraded Bug, I'm still only placing 3rd or 4th or so.

So it gets easier after the first round where you're learning the ropes of racing on sand? Interesting games design, that.

It doesn't help, of course, that the AI's cars seem to be a fair bit more powerful than your own, with them easily shunting you off the road if you get in their way. More than a couple of times I've been pushed out of a corner, then had to reset because I'd apparently cut it by too much.

It's a fun game so far, but it really is punishingly difficult at the moment.

It's a flawed game, but if you can get past some of the annoyances, it's really good fun.

This is the one thing you don't want to do, you need to work the gears to get anywhere.

Mally: have you watched the tutorial vids? It shows you how to use the clutch and handbrake efficiently through the corners. Also, to use the banks to help you steer round sharp bends, etc.

I'm after an open-world off-road racer. Setting your own course from one end of a vast tract of land to another, over hills, rivers, etc. Stuff like that. That new Codemasters thing seems like it'll fit the bill (Fuel, or something?) but does this have anything similar?

When I see this thread title, I keep reading it as 'Badger', which makes it sound like a game based around Craster trying to suppress his evil inner urges.

That's not a game, it's serious business.

No. Where are they?

I can't remember exactly, but there's an achievement for watching them all, and I've got it.

I'll stick it on tonight and find out.

When you first do each type of single race it shows them.

I don't know how you rewatch them.

There's a sub-menu within a sub-menu where you can watch them all in one go.

I saw that, and it's the only way I knew there were tutorials available. Buggered if I can find them though!

Ah, I'll have a look into that. Cheers, Duds.

It's old, but Screamer 4x4 is the only thing I can think of that fits that bill. I love it :)

I used to enjoy arsing about on Smuggler's Run ('Warzones' I think) on the Cube and just bomb around from one bit of the map to another.

SOB!

Racing games that open with a race where the AI are as fast as you but never seem to make mistakes make me unhappy.

Just finish 4th or 5th enough times to unlock the next tier of vehicles, then never race the Baja Bugs again. It gets much easier then, for some strange reason.
