Just been playing this, it's not half bad. Four-player co-op, blasting through waves and waves and waves and ohmygodthery'renotstopping waves of speedy zombies.

The advance demo's just gone up for pre-order types, any other bezzies succumbed yet? (EDIT: My Steam ID's sistercheeba if anyone fancies a co-op game)

Some initial thoughts: Intense as fuck, it's a pure shooter on a level even Serious Sam would do a double-take at. Excellent bot support, to the point where they can seamlessly take over if one of your team has to drop out early. Seems extremely well-balanced, where it feels like you're constantly being swarmed, but never quite enough to be impassable, which should be the dynamic 'action director' mechanism doing what it's supposed to. And yes, Valve have finally put secondary melee attacks in there.

And the negatives - Hmm, can't help but fear it might be a little one-note stretched over the course a full game (but fingers crossed that isn't the case). The demo's pretty stingy, with only two very short missions that isn't going to take anyone very long.

Optimistic then.

Just an Idea: Do 3 bezzies fancy making a pack that due to the massive amounts of games out this xmas that we'll hold off this game till the new year and the first bargain popping up.

Then we could all buy it together and play through it - BLAM BLAM BLAM!

If I'm reading this right, you get a demo, but only if you've already bought it?

That seems wrong somehow.

Well, the advance orders get the demo now, with the unwashed masses getting it next week. Just a cheap shot to get people to preorder, no doubt. Sadly, I'm just such a sucker. Zombies!

Luckily, this is the last game I'm getting. Well, that and Mirror's Edge. STOP RELEASING GOOD GAMES, YOU BASTARDS.

Again, I do think its worth remarking that only computer games have a fan base that will put up with adverts to view adverts. Or will pay for adverts. Or will buy things in advance in order to be advertised to earlier.

EDIT: Just to make it clear this isn't a slight on you SisterCheeba. This is a general comment.

It does kinda seem the wrong way round doesn't it.

"Give me the information to decide whether I'd want to buy your product? Not unless you buy it!"

I assumed we'd get a 360 demo at the same time (perhaps for Gold xbl people) but that's doesn't seem to have been the case.

But anyway, game seems fun, I await the chance to play it on a funsquare superplus with interest.

(EDIT: In respone to Lave,obv)

No offence taken, I realise the ridiculousness of it all. And it certainly would've been a lot nicer had they gone the Team Fortress route and just given us the entire game a couple of weeks early, with 'Beta' slapped on it.

It would've been a day one buy for me anyway, and the sneak peek plus an extra fiver off swung it for me. What can I say, I'm weak :(

FURTHER EDIT: Apparently there's an Xbox demo out now too, but only for US preorders at GameStop or some similary shite effort.

If I wasn't skint at the minute I would have pre-ordered Mirror's Edge to get the Time Trial unlock for the demo.

So I am exactly what I hate.

Aye, I don't mind playing shooters on 360, but this has to be one of the twitchiest in recent memory. The sheer speed of everything makes split-second aiming almost essential. After this, returning to Far Cry 2's going to feel like a leisurely sunday afternoon stroll. Never mind Fallout, which may well feel like going back in time.

I like proper zombies as much as the next sociopath, but they just wouldn't work in this kind of setting. You'd just stroll through, all four of you with your infinite-ammo pistols blasting everything without a care. Imagine Dead Rising if your ballistic weapons weren't completely useless.

Regardless, it'll no doubt be the first thing someone mods for it. As well as some sadist making a headshots-only version of the vanilla game, which would be fun, if certain death.

It certainly feels faster, although that could be the sheer numbers at play.

Just bumped up the difficulty, and wow does it ever make a difference. On Advanced, it's a much tougher run that you'll just about scrape through with some luck. On Expert, it's a nightmarish slog just getting anywhere near the safe house, and much more thrilling with it.

It's really something when you're lying there pinned to the floor incapacitated, blasting away with your sidearm through a sea of zombies, trying to clear enough room for the last standing squadmate to revive somebody, anybody, to even the odds a little. And with the randomisation, the bastards can come at any time, and you're never quite sure where weapons are going to be at any given playthrough.

Not much further to go, I'll make it there yet :ninja:

UPDATE: The demo's recently gone live for everyone. Well, everyone with a PC or 360 anyway. Includes singleplayer and co-op, and is well worth a punt.

It seems Quite Good. And the zombage is Very Fair. The amount of gore/flesh wreckage they display is Rather Poor. But still better than Centre Parting Monthly.

I love it. Anyone fancy a game later when I've dicked about with my PSP? I've been playing it for a few days now, after rather stupidly pre-ordering the PC version on Steam, despite the fact that I'm getting the 360 version sent. Never mind, it's great!

Runny zombage BOO! Where's crippy zombage with legs dangling off and stuff? Where's entrails out impeding knee movement zombage? Where's a Dr Tongue with no jawbone waiting for carrion to be mulched into smaller bits to jam down his gaping esophagus? Nowhere int demo, that's for damn certain.

Lets try getting the right thread this time, eh?

Single player demo tried, didn't really like it all that much. I was getting bored by the sameyness by the middle of the second level and turned it off.

Will try co-op, but as it stands, I don't really see myself buying this.

If it makes you feel any better, I was just face-to-face with one of the 'boss' zombies, and he seemed to be missing a jawbone. Sadly no alligators with their mouths taped shut though :(

They should have a Capt. Rhodes boss who stamps around roaring, chewing the level scenery to rubble.

This should be ready for me to play when I get home this afternoon. Annoyingly it kept stopping my download even when I was just playing offline games of Fable II and FIFA 09. Bah.

I couldn't be arsed to finish the demo in single player. Then tried a multiplayer game with some randoms and it was awesome. Proper teamwork.

We were down in some tunnels near the end and we heard crying.

Teammate: "Everyone knows how to avoid witches, right?"

Me: "No."

Teammate: "Oh dear. Crouch and turn your lights off."

I know how to do that. So we crouch and start moving forward. Then we hear...

Another teammate, panicking: "How do you crouch? How do you crouch? How do you crouch?"

I shout "LB!" but it's too late. The witch is up and about and there's complete panic for a few seconds. We kill her, but the guy who didn't know how to crouch is dead. I rescued him, though, and we go up some stairs to a big room with some generators in it.

Suddenly there's some huge, huge bastard running for us. I throw a molotov cocktail at him and he's on fire, but then he's on top of me and I'm firing up at his face while flames fill the screen and my teammates are, I assume, firing down at the flaming zombie beast and he dies and I get up with just about no health left. Luckily, the next room we hit has a medikit in it and I heal myself.

Phew.

Not played the demo yet (damn you Fallout 3 and your addictive ways) but I am thinking this is an early-next-year purchase. My reasoning is, it's going to need four bezzies around for maximum funnage, so I'd rather wait until there is a critical mass of people who have the game before picking it up. Lord knows there are enough other compelling games this time of year -- Fallout 3 is still soaking up time, I've barely touched Dead Space, and Rock Band 2 drops (I think) the same day as Left4Dead. So I'm taking a wait-and-see approach.

I'd snap Left 4 Dead up in a moment if its RRP was £20. I can't justify paying full price for it, though, no matter how awesome it is.

Hopefully it'll be cheap soon - and people will still be playing it. Real people, not those hardcore types who never miss a shot and only play on Expert and will kick you from the game the first time you accidently blast a teammate in the heat of the moment.

Yeah I worry slightly about value for money from a game I know I will only enjoy with bezzies. I've easily had my money's worth from CoD4, but only because a dozen of us have it and were often playing it.

It's still £35-40 everywhere. It sold poorly on PS3, so I don't think they pressed a lot of 360 copies; and it sold poorly again, so there aren't a lot of second hand copies, I suspect.

I'd snap Left 4 Dead up in a moment if its RRP was £20. I can't justify paying full price for it, though, no matter how awesome it is.

It's currently £20 at Amazon (assuming you're honouring the PC treaty, as I will be after Christmas).
