For those looking to test it out for themselves, they have a couple of free downloads for you to try (Lure of the Temptress and Beneath A Steel Sky). Downloading and installation very simple, the use of their downloader tool is entirely optional, plus you get free bonus content after making a 'purchase'. Prices of games are either at $5.99 or $9.99.

So yeah, better than Steam when it comes to certain games, but obviously not as huge a catalogue, but then I don't think it's been around for as long.

But yes I adore them, they do stuff right, at a good price and with an excellent organised community.

They're what online games shopping should always have been and that's why they've taken altogether too much of my cash since launch (which you're right is less than 6 months).

I'm pleased they seem to be doing well. I bought a game from them, and jolly good it is too. I'd buy more, as I was waiting to for a year, but I've spent enough on games and such to last until the summer, so. I'm sure I'll buy from them again in future, though. Steam can stay fucked off.

Here's hoping they get Beyond Good and Evil, which I've still never played.

Speaking of Steam though, it'd be nice if GOG obtained Commander Keen and was able to match or beat their current 3-quid asking price.

Keen is id owned rather than Apogee, so it's at least a possibility, part of their ethos is just the two price points for simplicity though so it'd be $5.99 most likely.

Can you re-download games from GOG? More accuratly, can I get and play them on my work PC and my home one through the same purchase?

apparently if you sign up for the beta you get tomb raider legend free.

You missed out that the alternative to a free copy of Tomb Raider Legend is a free dose of typhoid. Any right minded person would take the latter.

I don't mind them doing this, especially as they cut SCUMMVM in, but the email I had about it ("hey look how cool we are! We're giving you a free game!") did make me roll my eyes a little.

Freespace 2 had a rather unusual EULA that encouraged the users to distribute it for free too, so it's interesting that they're charging for it.

Most free downloads of Lure and BASS don't have the manual and comic book too.

I had an email from them today so I assume it's new to the site. The email also said that Heroes of Might & Magic, Far Cry, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six were on the way too.

Ooh, I just won a review competition on gog, and they sent me a code for a free game of my choice. I didn't even know there was a competition.

It seems to be basically random draw, because one of the other winners was utterly shit, but who cares.

What game should I get, folks? I'm being Irish and only choosing from the more expensive ones to make the most of it, but it's still difficult. I'm thinking of The Guild.

About six months back I had a look over GOG after seeing it in a few of my magazines. They didn't really have anything I wanted, apart from Duke3d and I have the hi res texture version any way.

One game I really wanted to see again was Screamer. Out in the states I had a genuine copy and tried to get it running in Dosbox. I failored.

So, I sent a hopeful email to GOG.com and asked them to consider adding Screamer to the list.

For those who have never played it Screamer is/was Interplay/Virgin Media's forray into the 'Ridge' market. And, IMO it was better than Ridge.

So, today when I signed up for GOG (bit bored) I noted they have Screamer ! wahoo.

So, I made my first purchase. Then I saw an offer for FO1, FO2 and FOthecrapone for $14 so I'm considering those too. I've never played any FO game before FO3.

I got Screamer for the princely sum of $5.99, about 4 quid I think. Best part is you get the manual and as a really nice bonus the soundtrack

Dav. Yes, they wrap the games in their own custom shell to make them fully compatible with XP/Vista.

All gog stuff works in xp and vista. Screamer works fine (it uses a customised dosbox underneath) on my Vista x64 machine.

The soundtrack to screamer by the way is by that man Brimble.

EDIT : I have 17 games on gog. Crikey.

I remember watching this game do about 2FPS in SVGA mode back on my 486 DX266 (66 mhz) and my mighty 1mb trident VGA graphics card.

Back then it looked better than most driving games around, and, for playability it absolutely pwnz joo.

I might have to get Screamer myself. It was the first game I had for my first PC (a Cyrix 133 which cost me £900) and I loved it. I got the impression that it would run on pretty much anything.

It's popup. It was *terrible* tbh but it still kicked Saturn Daytona's ass.

TBH I don't notice it when driving along after a few mins.

In VGA mode? absolutely SVGA mode however reqd a SVGA graphics card with at least 1mb memory. which back then was a lot considering VGA cards only had 256k haha.

I still remember going to a shop and buying my Righteous Orchid 4mb Voodoo 1 add on card for my S3 Verge for 190 quid

I recently played "Getting your wireless working III", which wasn't much fun, and the end guy was really hard.

Pleasingly, somewhere between Ubuntu $LAST_ONE_I_TRIED and 8.10, the wireless on my orange Toshiba started working out of the box. Previously it required such a horrendous hacky mess of workarounds I gave up and used wired ethernet.
